Have you ever tried to get your thoughts down in one coherent chunk of text, but no matter how hard you try it comes out no where near what you wanted it to sound like? It happens all the time no matter what type of writer you are.
Writing for a paper and don't know where to go with it? It's writer's block.
Trying to write a story for class, but the words aren't coming out right? It's writer's block.
Can't choose what to write in the holiday card for grandma? It's writer's block.
Desperately trying to write a poem for a loved one as a token of affection, but it's turning out like a flaming pile of poop in a bag? It's writer's block.
Writer's block isn't prejudice against any type of writing. It can affect the young, the old, the tall, the small, the amateur writer to the best selling author. It doesn't pick and choose.
I suffer from writer's block even for these articles sometimes. No matter how much I love an idea there are sometimes that I just cannot put the words to a page. I try all sorts of methods to break through it, but there are just times where it stays with me. There are times I completely abandon a project, because nothing is coming to me.
The only way I break through my block is start writing about anything and everything.
I will begin a new project just to distract myself from the frustration of the previous project. I'll only go back to it when I have new ideas. It's the only thing that works for me.
There are other methods that some people say work.
You can try writing prompts from online. You can just write through it. You could try to make an outline for your project in attempts to keep yourself on track. These things work for some people, but they do not work for me.
I will love something until I hate it. I try to write until I can't anymore. It hurts sometimes when I know I need to get the words out. During my senior thesis for my undergrad, I had to construct a 25 page paper. It took me weeks. I knew what I needed to get done. I knew what needed to go in it, but every time I sat down to write the paper, I just couldn't. I had no idea why.
Writer's block can strike at any time. It can affect anyone. It just wants to ruin your day when your day consists of being productive. It loves to make you mad. It feeds on your frustration. So, my words of advice for anyone that suffers with this conundrum regularly.
Wait it out. Do not give into the extreme emotions that it can bring. Do not throw your writing tools. Take deep breathes. Take a break. Do something to get your mind back on track.
Writer's block isn't the end of the world. Do not make it be.
