I have always wanted to start a blog. There has been no real reason for the fact that I haven’t yet. I guess it just comes down to the fact that I can be very lazy, and have a horrible time overcoming procrastination. If, for some reason, you have no clue as to what a blog is, it is simply the equivalent of an online journal. It's where you write your thoughts, ambitions, and possibly some ideas, but mostly, it’s something to call your own.
I’m going to be honest, I am sitting in my living room, next to my girlfriend. I have been in class all day. I drove an hour from my college to get back home and I am supposed to be camping with my family, but I have writers block.
At this point, I am doing what all my English teachers ever told me. My high school creative writing teacher said the best cure was writing whatever comes to my mind and hope that it ends up becoming something that isn’t completely rubbish.
I lose my train of thought easily. Back to the blog concept, I love to write. I love to express myself through one of the oldest mediums, so yes, I will be starting a blog. I have an irrational fear, as does my friend Dominic, of one day losing all known memory to me. We watch movies like The Notebook. I am not saying that I am a fan of said movie, I only refer to it because it pertains to what I have to say. We see movies such as that, or know people personally, that have been cursed with things such as Alzheimer’s, or suffer from traumatic head injuries. They lose their memories, their own history is foreign to them, and that is something that some of us don’t fully grasp.
I was one of those people. I was one of those people that never paid much attention to memory loss, or the fact that I, on a daily basis, continue to make a history of my own that I never want to forget. What if one of the days causes me to lose the ability to recall that history? My own history. As bleak and gray as that may sound, it is something worth contemplating.
That is one of the reasons I want to start a blog, a place that I can’t lose or spill coffee on. I know that there are many traditionalists out there that prefer analog methods such as paper and pen, and I too enjoy the methods of the past. However, in this case, I need longevity and accessibility. I need something that will forever give me the ability to access the important things of my past.
That’s another reason that I love creating images with photography. Taking a picture is like possessing a super power. It gives you the ability to freeze time, if only for a moment. You can look back at what was, and not what is. If I lose the ability to recall what I have created, done, accomplished, and love, I want to know that somewhere I can see those things in a physical form, read the words for myself, relive the moments again, if only one last time.
I am sitting on my couch. I should be camping, but I had writers block. I guess what my teachers told me was true. Now I have a thought, a new ambition to go and live in the moment because we may never have the ability to recall what we did today, tomorrow. I am going to go make some memories with the people in my life I cherish most.
You should do the same.
