Writer's block can be frustrating. But it does not have to be a menace that we cannot conquer. Everyone has their own way of overcoming writer's block, and sometimes it's a different way every time – the more, the merrier. Sometimes the ways we overcome writer's block remind us of why we fell in love with writing in the first place.
Do something you love. Go out and do something that makes you your happiest, that makes you forget about every stressful and responsible thing going on in your world. Do something that you would enjoy writing about. Do something that you would be excited to tell someone else about.
Read. Reading the words of another writer distracts us from our task and allows us to enjoy the outcome of someone else's writer's block. It stimulates the mind and lets you explore a world that is not your own.
Travel somewhere new. Sometimes a case of wanderlust is all you need to get the wheels turning again. Being somewhere new, experiencing the adventure that comes with traveling; it opens your mind to new things and leaves you with memories. It turns you into a storyteller. What is better for writing than experiences to write about?
Take a nap. What doesn't a nap cure? Staring at your computer screen or the pages of your journal for hours on end can't be good for your eyes. Take a break, hit the hay, dream something inspiring, and get a fresh start.
Talk to someone who challenges your thinking. Most everyone has that one person (or multiple people) that – when you talk to them – often provide you with a new perspective on things. They open your mind in a way that inspires you, and often leave you with a deep yearning to be around them all of the time. These types of people are the ones that are very appreciated when it comes to writer's block.
Write. Brainstorm. Babble. Journal. Write down every thought in your head that you can't seem to say outloud. The best way to become a better writer is to write. It doesn't have to be good, it doesn't have to have an audience or any organization. Sometimes it seems impossible: If I have writer's block, what could I possibly write about? Right? But sometimes, getting all your thoughts down on paper is exactly what you need to do to figure out what you need to be writing about.
Everyone has their own techniques. But, usually, the ways that we overcome the notorious writer's block, is by doing things that we enjoy, that we're passionate about; the things we enjoy writing about and are passionate about. Writer's block can be frustrating and sometimes, when we're presented with a deadline, we see writing as more of a tedious task, rather than something we fell in love with doing. The ways that we overcome it allow us to be reminded of just why writing consumed us as much as it did to begin with, and present us with the cure to writers block: falling in love with it over and over again.
