Writer Bio: David Bock

Thank you everyone for reading! My Name is David Bock and I am Editor-In-Chief of The Odyssey here at UC Davis. I plan to make this Greek News Source not only one of the best on campus but in the entire city of Davis as well. Since my team of writers and I will be writing everything you read here at The Odyssey I asked each of them to provide a simple autobiography just like this one so that you all could see into our personal backgrounds a little and see where our writing opinions are coming from.

What is writing to you? To me it’s a boundless expression of opinions and feelings that no one can control. I feel as though when my pen hits paper my mind runs free jotting down every aspect I can think about and that is relevant to the story but of course there is A LOT of editing! I have never lead a team of writers before this opportunity but I will do my best to bring this team of amazing authors together and make an extremely productive and informative news source.

I grew up in a small town called Running Springs in the mountains of Southern California. I have an identical twin that attends SDSU and an older brother attending Fort Lewis College. My father is a retired firefighter and my mother is a working nurse.  Through high school I was always very active in sports and student leadership. I tried to stay involved as much as I could as I felt that getting my voice heard was one of the most important aspects of my high school career.

I visited Davis for the first time during the spring break of my senior year in high school and experienced one of those cheesy falling in love with campus kind of moments. I came to Davis in fall of 2013 not knowing what to expect socially and academically. I quickly was introduced to the difficulty of the academics and pleasantly surprised when I found the social life I desired through the Greek life here. I didn’t rush immediately but waited a whole quarter watching from the outside to see if it really was the life for me. During the winter quarter of 2013 I decided to rush Sigma Chi. I quickly learned that this was the organization I wanted to be apart of. I have enjoyed the deep bonds of friendship and the purposed importance of excellence and leadership that this fraternity has provided me. Some people may say that I bought my friends but I see it as me buying a better version of myself.

The Odyssey was proposed to me 2 months ago and immediately I believed that I could take this idea of a Greek Newspaper to new heights at UC Davis.  Not only do I want to provide an entertaining news source but I would like The Odyssey to be an informative source where UC Davis students will be able to look for advice on weekend trips, recreation around Davis, updates on the entirety of the UC Davis Greek system, and interesting articles to help not only Greeks but all students through their college lives. With these goals we will attempt to bring you all a news source which we hope will be helpful and entertaining to all of you. Again I thank you all for reading and look forward to your continued support of The Odyssey at UC Davis!!!

“A Sig I am a Sig I’ll be; A Sig through all eternity. A Sig by day, a Sig by night; To be a Sig is my delight!”

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
