Ava DuVernay is a writer, producer, and film-maker who has produced and directed a number of films, shows, and just recently a music video such as "Selma," "Scandal," and Jay-Z's "Family Feud." But in light of her most recent film project, "A Wrinkle in Time," I want to highlight four reasons as to why we all need to support this movie. Recently, there has been an incredible amount of work produced with people of color by people of color ("Black Panther"). I think that since Black Panther has been released and has been doing incredibly well in theaters, we need to have the same energy for this film as well. This film is produced by a woman of color and features women of color as well (Mindy Kaling, Oprah, and Stormi Reid). Here are four reasons as to why we all need to focus on this movie as well.

1. Ava is the first black woman to direct a live-action film with a budget of $100 million

This alone is huge! "Selma," one of her recent films had only a budget of $20 million. These opportunities are not often given or presented to people of color. The fact that she is the first black woman to direct a live-action film with a budget like this is incredible, but should not stop Hollywood from presenting more filmmakers who are people of color (specifically women of color) with these opportunities.

2. The movie looks absolutely magical

If you've read the book which the movie is based upon by Madeleine L'Engle, then you understand why the film is anticipated by many. The movie strives to make a point of why we should seek the hero within ourselves and in her words, "Be the heroine of our own story."

3. The Representation!

In this movie, there are three women of color one of whom is the lead actress. The three women of color are Oprah, Mindy Kaling, and Stormi Reid. By having these women of color on screen and in a film like this gives people a new narrative as to what roles are considered for people of color. We can shine just as bright in movies like these instead of the stereotypical Hollywood roles that are given to us. This also allows youth who are also people of color to feel represented and know that they too matter in an industry like this. '

4. This movie exhibits her determination to break boundaries

To be a woman who is a leading film director, writer, and producer can be incredibly challenging because opportunities aren't always presented or produced for women of color. In her words, Ava says, "Women have been trained in our culture and society to ask for what we want instead of taking what we want. We've been indoctrinated with this culture of permission....but that time has passed." In other words, now is the time to break boundaries and Ava is doing just that.

I hope this article gave you some insight into the film and why it's so important that we support Ava's work just as much as "Black Panther" (which is still amazing). I encourage everyone to go see it because I'll be in the theaters marveling at her creative work like many others. Again, we need to support people of color and their creative directions (whatever that may be) because they are valid. Please go see "A Wrinkle in Time" and support Ava.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
