Worth the Wait

Though waiting for recruitment is hard, it’s worth it.

Worth the Wait

“I want to be you, look like you, dress like you, walk like
you and talk like you,” declares every freshman girl as they stare into your soul while you walk by them with your Greek letters on the frocket of your shirt.

Every school has its own way of doing recruitment. While most universities hold recruitment before the fall semester begins, some schools have reversed the process and have freshmen go through recruitment in January before the spring semester starts. This begins the start of what I like to call the “let’s suck up to every sorority girl I meet” stage.

Yes, I was once a freshman going through spring recruitment and was scared out of my mind to talk to girls in sororities because I felt I would not live up to the potential of being one of their future sisters. Although being on the other side has shown my compassion and humor, little did I know it is bluntly obvious to see genuine personalities compared to the opposed fake attitude.

As a freshman you already have so much on your plate; a new school, leaving home, sleeping in a bedroom the size of your bathroom at home, how are you supposed to handle finding all new friends and see where you fit in, too? I get it, trust me. Freshman year is bittersweet, and depending on the person, it can make or break you. On top of everything else that goes on in your life you have a whole semester before recruitment, which you are definitely doing because who wouldn’t want 300 sisters? So what do you do during this first semester? Do you go out every night and party hard? I mean it is your freshman year. Or do you go to every rush event and suck up to every over-sized sorority t-shirt wearing girl you see on campus?

My suggestion is so simple it’s going to blow your mind. What is it, you ask? Oh yeah, do you and don’t let anyone get in your away.  You are awesome and are so loved, so just show that. Attack us with your genuine personality, your laugh and your smile. Spring recruitment has so many benefits. You get one entire semester to figure out which sorority fits you the best and if recruitment is even for you. This semester challenges you to get out of your comfort zone and grow in ways you thought were not possible before.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
