It's estimated that one-fifth to one-third of women in Seoul have done cosmetic plastic surgery. Let's put this in a different way. Imagine four people in a room. Out of those four people, one of them has done plastic surgery.
In South Korea, getting their kids plastic surgery as a graduation present is a norm. South Korea is known as the world capital of plastic surgery according to The New Yorker.
When applying for jobs in South Korea, looks really do matter. Everyone works hard to have the best grades possible, so in order to stand out, looks are a priority. Attaching a photo to your resume is more than just a picture. It can determine if you get the job or not based on how you look. Do you have double eyelids? Is your nose high and pointed? Are your jaw and chin sharp enough? These are all things that people will look for and these are also one of the most requested plastic surgeries.
Blepharoplasty, also known as double eyelid surgery is the most popular plastic surgery operation. If you take a look in the mirror, there may or may not be a crease/fold right above your eye. If there is, then you have double eyelids. If not, then you have monolids (some even have a triple eyelid). Most Koreans have monolids and this can give the illusion to smaller eyes. Doing this procedure costs less money and the recovery time is fast compared to other procedures like the cheekbone surgery which can take 42 days to heal. Looking pretty comes at a cost, or does it?
All countries think different on the definition of beauty. Living in America, it's a little bit different compared to other countries. Because of social media and other influences, most Americans live with the belief that everyone is beautiful. It doesn't matter if you're 110 pounds or if you're 170 pounds, there is no standard of beauty in America for many people.
However, head into Asia and you can be told that you're fat while in America you're told that you're slim. Countries like China and Korea tend to have a set standard of beauty and because of this, everyone is starting to look the same after doing plastic surgery because everyone wants the same thing done.
Cosmetic surgery may be able to boost people's confidence and stop their insecurities, but it can spike up other people's insecurities. There's pros and cons to both sides, on whether cosmetic plastic surgery is beneficial or not, but in the end, it's your personal decision and that's to be respected.
