In a world divided by politics, can you imagine a world with no political parties? How about a world of equity? Just imagine the amount of work our society could accomplish together instead of competing against each other to solve problems. Think about the difference we could make in the overall decision-making in politics because we would not have such selfish propaganda that would hurt national interest. According to futureofworking.com, the United States "is facing a lot of issues right now, both complex and controversial. Yet, there seems that there aren’t many solutions being thrown out there to get these issues fixed. The divide between Democrats and Republicans is so great that they can’t even stay in one room to solve issues to help their country.” The only solution to our political gridlocks is to diminish the two-party system and replace it with equity; however, political parties do have their advantages which I would like to discuss both points.
While having a two-party system in the United States may seem troublesome to people, there are compelling points that make it not seem so bad. A two-party system gives the American public an easier time in deciding who to vote for since their choices are limited. Plus the government can run more efficiently with the extremist views being balanced out. One of the last points is that political parties make the country more organized. However, history has shown that the government is in a constant gridlock because of having the two party system.
To begin with, the pros of diminishing the two-party system, let’s take a blast from the past into why a political party was never meant to be before getting into the detail of why political parties harm America’s progress. In the beginning, there was George Washington who everyone knows as our appointed first president, but nonetheless, during his presidency, he realized after a few years that the United States was progressing in a way that may not end as well as hoped. Washington, after acknowledging this path, resigned and composed a farewell address that brought up three key points, but one of the points mentioned was on the topic political parties. In George Washington’s Farewell Address from Avalon.law.yale.edu, in an excerpt from the text he states, “It is a spirit not to be encouraged. From their natural tendency, it is certain there will always be enough of that spirit for every salutary purpose. And there being a constant danger of excess, the effort ought to be by force of public opinion, to mitigate and assuage it.” His statement specifically points out that the media will always be biased to try and influence others, but not only that but political parties will consume our lives. I have heard of so many people voting straight party line ticket instead of knowing the candidates running for each position.
Straight party voting is dangerous in accordance to potentially putting a less worthy elector in power. Voters should carefully consider all candidates in any form of election and vote for who would be the best candidate. The United States according to Dr. Peter T. Coleman in his Psychology article, “Why Politics Are Stuck in the US And what you and I can do about it” that America has, “been becoming increasingly more polarized and deadlocked for over 30 years now. Which means today our leaders can agree on almost nothing.” Now you may be thinking well this is the nature of politics, well you’ve been led in the wrong direction. For decades in the past, we have had a non-partisan consensus based problem solving that has allowed us to solve all of our problems until the recent 30 years. In politics, we have the ten-year rule and America’s deficit reaches 4.2 billion dollars a day, but why does the ten-year rule apply? It is the same for a war when you look for the cause, something had to set the stage to put us on that path. The increase in our deficit as Dr. Coleman states is from political shocks such as 1968 MLK & Bobby Kennedy assassinations, 1971 Pentagon papers released, 1972 Watergate scandal, and 1973 Roe V. Wade decision. Major shocks like these have torn apart our unity and divided us into the Democrats and Republicans that we are today.
In conclusion, I have explained the advantages of a two party system and the disadvantages. The United States is a country divided by parties and also a prime example of why it does not work. Sadly, if America was without political parties, we would always have to revert back to it because a perfect society does not exist. I will end with a quote by the philosopher Aristotle where he states, “The majority must be supreme, and that whatever the majority approve must be the end and the just. Every citizen, it is said, must have equality.”
