One Word: Let's Talk About The 'N Word'

One Word: Let's Talk About The 'N Word'
Joe For America

I'd be lying if I said I never said it and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be mad at you for saying it. What am I talking about? The "N" word, of course. Yes that means ni**a or ni**er. The word that's been around since slavery and the word that is now society's new normal. This is something that I cant quite understand. The definition of the " n word" according to Dictionary.com is "a term used to refer to or address a black person" or "a term used to refer to a person of any racial or ethnic origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant." The word itself is labeled "Extremely Disparaging and Offensive." There's seems to be no good connotation with the word yet in our society for some the word is another term for friend. But, there is nothing friendly about it.

Recently, some of Ms.Teen USA winner Karlie Hay's tweets were released. Hay is 18 years old and white, and she was caught calling her friends the N word.

After seeing these tweets, many people wanted to dethrone Hay. The Miss America Organization has decided not to dethrone Hay and stated, "The language Karlie Hay used is unacceptable at any age and in no way reflects the values of The Miss Universe Organization. As Karlie stated, she was in a different place in her life and made a serious mistake she regrets and for which she sincerely apologizes.. "We as an organization are committed to supporting her continued growth. Hay stated herself in a E News interview that, "At that age, I was being a follower. I was trying to fit in with my friends. The word was thrown around in the music I listened to, with the friends I hung out with, and I had no guidance. So, it was kind of a careless mistake."

I don't believe Hay should be dethroned. I don't support her tweets in any way but there is truth in her statement. She says " I was being a follower...it was a careless mistake" and that is exactly what I think the problem in society is. Everyone claims to make "careless mistakes" when they realize they offended someone.

I will never forget the night my friends and I went out dinner. We were minding our own business, then randomly this white girl across from us shouts to her white friends "let's go my ni**as." She thought it was hilarious until she realized there was about 10 black people sitting across from her. She quickly got up to leave and apologized, but that's just another example of a "careless mistake."

If you have to apologize for saying something, you probably shouldn't be saying it.

A word that originated from slavery, a word that means your ignorant, now is considered cool. The ironic part is some white people even refer to themselves as "ni**as," but why would you want to call yourself ignorant or be called something that originated from slavery. The N word is not OK nor has it ever been OK, and its a word that we should all delete from our vocabulary. No matter if your black or white, using the N word, shows complete ignorance making the definition true.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
