Weekends at Fordham.... Trust me, they are more than memorable. If you have ever referred to yourself as a social butterfly, then the bars in the Bronx are the places for you. First things first, you’ve got to be safe and watch out for yourself and your friends, because let’s just say it, folks: You’re in the Bronx. But something almost as important as safety when going out to the bars is knowing your songs, and not just any songs. I’m talking about the top nine of the many classics that will play at the bars. Of course, mumbling words that may or may not be the actual lyrics and aimlessly jumping around will certainly suffice, but who wants to settle for average? Us Bronx bombers must dress (and sing) to impress. Here’s the list of the classics that you’ll definitely need to know.
1. "Ignition Remix" - R Kelly
Okay, this is a major throwback, but it may be one of the most popular songs to play in the bars. Believe it or not, this song never gets old. No matter how many times it plays a night, everyone will act like they haven’t heard it in eight years every time it comes on. It’s got that smooth R&B rhythm with a beat that makes you want to get up and dance no matter how terrib(ly good) your moves are.
2. "Partition" - Beyoncé
Let’s be honest, we’re talking about Queen Bee here. Need I say more? When this song comes on, make sure you and your group have a decent sized circle because things are about to go down (minus the partition, of course).
3. "Don't Stop Believing" - Journey
This feel-good classic definitely brings the crowd together. It’s also a belting song, but don’t worry. It’s okay to not hit the high notes. Just know the lyrics and you’ll be golden, pony boy.
4. "Mr. Brightside" - The Killers
Although this song is pretty dark on some levels, EVERYONE will sing to this, even the bouncers (with some encouragement). This may sound a little gross, but don’t get too close when singing to your circle during this song. If you do, you may need a tissue to wipe the spit off your face.
5. "Shake It Off" - Taylor Swift
Even if you’re a guy, you will absolutely want to get up and sing along to this one at 2 a.m. on a Friday night. Who wouldn’t? This catchy song is simple to sing and extremely fun to jump around the bar to.
6. "Piano Man" - Billy Joel
This little number is definitely a late night jingle that plays when everyone is settling down and preparing to stumble back to campus. Warning: this is a very loud and scream-worthy song, so a word to the wise: Know your words before belting out the wrong lyric. Nothing is more embarrassing than shouting your “la la la”s during the piano solo.
7. "Hips Don't Lie" - Shakira
The name of the song says it all, but this favorite hit is a must-know for any person looking to bailar and cantar con sus amigos.
8. "Hey Ya" - Outkast
Also a major throwback (and one of my personal favorites), it still has a beat like no other. This song can make a quiet, boring crowd an extremely fun one in an instant. It can be a group circle song, but don’t be afraid to venture out and sing with strangers—that’s where the fun really is.
9. "Gold Digger" - Kanye West ft. Jamie Foxx
This song may be one of the best classics to twerk to. Knowing these lyrics will make you an unforgettable riot for the bar crowds (in a good way). Not to worry—if you don’t know all of the words but know the beat, you’ve got it in the bag.
So there you have it. But remember, there are countless other great songs that play in the bars. Just make sure you bring your dancin’ shoes and happy self, and you’re guaranteed to have a good time. Party wisely, my fellow rams, and start practicing!
