My favorite Olympic sport to watch has always been women's gymnastics. I did gymnastics when I was younger and that fueled my interest in watching it. The Olympic trials for Rio are in full swing and the first half of women's gymnastics is complete. Here is a run through of these Olympic hopefuls and how they're performing.
Simone Biles has been all over social media, making her a favorite to so many people. With a famous floor routine and even a tumbling pass named after her, people are saying she's a definite yes for Rio. A first place spot after day one of the trials also makes it even more likely that she will be a part of the team.
There is a head to head battle betweenMadison Kocian and Ashton Locklear Ashton is the only gymnast to compete on just two events: bars and beam.
Currently in the number two spot is 16 year old Laurie Hernandez. Followed by Laurie is 2012 Olympic team member, Aly Raisman. Aly earned a 15.450 on floor which was the second-best score, and her best of the day. Laurie put on an equally impressive floor routine but scored 0.15 points fewer than Aly. However, she was ahead of Aly for second place by the end of the night with an overall score of 60.850. Her finest performance came on beam, where she got a 15.500, the night's highest for that event.
The all-around champion in London four years ago was Gabby Douglas. She was hoping to return this year to take home more gold, but that dream may be cut short. She started out strong but her beam routine was where she went wrong. A fall on beam caused her to drop down to seventh place at the end of the night.
The final night of the trials was Sunday the 10th of July. The team was announced at the end of the night, but be sure to catch the rest of the trials, gymnastics or not, and be ready to cheer on the USA in Rio!
