This past week has been fun, with fashion week and the second year anniversary since Emma Watson announced the HeForShe campaign. It's also been a great week for people hating on women, yay! What else is new.
Firstly, Gigi Hadid had a run-in with infamous celebrity prankster, Vitalii Sediuk . He grabbed her from behind as she walked out of a fashion show with her sister, Bella. He proceeded to hold her up in the air as her adrenaline kicked in and she tried to elbow him to get out of his grasp. He eventually let go and ran away. Sediuk then advertised his encounter on Instagram claiming, " While I consider Gigi Hadid beautiful, she and her friend Kendall Jenner, have nothing to do with high fashion. By doing this I encourage fashion industry to put true talents on the runway and Vogue covers instead of well-connected cute girls from Instagram." He basically assaulted someone and justified it by saying that it was in "protest". Apparently scaring a woman into thinking she's being attacked is funny.
On top of this whole conundrum, various websites have been posting articles about this claiming that she "lashed out". Women walk out of their homes and are always faced with the possibility that they could be attacked whilst walking around or after a party. We have to be vigilant about who's around us at all times, so when something like this happens, our brains go insane. Our fight or flight senses activate and, obviously, Hadid decided to fight. And she had every right to do so.
To add to the wondrous white men taking advantage of their privilege, The Sun decided to publish this:
This hilarious column written by a butthurt child, Rod Liddle, undermines Watson's efforts to achieve gender equality worldwide. This week, in particular, she discussed sexual assault on college campuses. Apparently, that's just some "whining, leftie, PC crap." As much as I have my qualms with the HeForShe campaign, it doesn't deserve this kind of scrutiny. Emma Watson is a college educated, incredible, and complex woman. I'm pretty sure she knows what she's talking about.
And with this, we've learned that a woman's safety is completely unimportant and on top of that, standing up for ourselves is too much for people to handle.
