Every Sunday night for the past ten weeks, the internet has exploded over every small or large thing "Game of Thrones" has done during its sixth season. The ninth episode of each season is notorious for being the most dramatic, and the season finale usually sets up the season to come. This season, however, decided to make the season finale the most dramatic episode the fans have ever seen. Nearly every plot line was followed, a few were ended, and unexpected thrills graced the screen from the moment the theme song faded into silence. With all of this action happening, some people won and some lost. Here are the standings for the episode:
5. Loser: Daario Naharis
Although other characters would have killed for a fate worse than the one granted to Daario Naharis, he wasn't too happy about being left behind in Mereen as his girlfriend dumps him and conquers the Seven Kingdoms. Poor Daario even told Daenerys that he loved her and would follow her across the sea just to be her mistress. Dany, on the other hand, later admitted that she felt nothing at all. Ouch.
4. Loser: The Freys (and Baked Goods)
Walder Frey has had it pretty good for the last three seasons since he betrayed Robb Stark and aligned himself with the Lannisters. Or he had it pretty good until Arya Stark returned, disguised herself as a servant girl, and slit Walder Frey's throat. Before that, however, Arya slaughtered two of Walders sons, baked them into pies and then fed them to their unsespecting father. Gross. Not a good day for House Frey or baked goods.
3. Loser: House Tyrell
When Margery warned her grandmother to leave King's Landing, we had a feeling that she was about to take the High Sparrow down. But then things didn't turn out quite like we planned. Instead, Margery, Lores, and their father didn't make it out of the episode, leaving Olenna Tyrell as the only heir to Highgarden. Not exactly promising for their future, but we haven't seen the last of her, either.
2. Loser: And The Rest of King's Landing
In addition to the slaughter of House Tyrell, the explosion of Wildfire rocked all of King's Landing and killed almost every main character there. All of the citizens had their church destoryed and then were subjected to probably the cruelest ruler yet, Cersei Lannister.
1. Loser: Tommen Baratheon
Tommen, of course, witnessed the destruction of his own city at the hands of his mother, the death of his wife at the hands of his mother, and his own powerlessness at the hands of his mother. Then we all witness Tommen promptly walk out his window. You can't really blame him, which makes him the No. 1 loser of the finale.
5. Winner: House Stark
The Red Wedding has finally been avenged, and the Stark banner finally hangs over the wall of Winterfell for the first time since anyone can remember. The 'King of the North' scene was a little too reminiscent of Robb for our liking, but we're just happy that the family is starting to reunite and slay their enemies.
4. Winner: Team Daenerys
After six seasons of wondering when Daenerys was finally going to get her act together, we see her sailing off for Westeros, equipped with multiple armies, ships, dragons, and a dream team. Eyes actually teared up when she officially made Tyrion the Hand of the Queen, and Varys has gone off to Dorne to gain some interesting and exciting allies for Team Dany.
3. Winner: Women
OK, so not all of the powerful women made it through the finale, but those who did figuratively and literally slayed. Bewteen Arya, Sansa, Daenerys, Cersei and even Lady Mormont, the ladies really carried the weight of the show and of the Seven Kingdoms. We're not entirely sure if men did anything in the episode besides get rejected or die.
2. Winner: Cersei Lannister
If the first 20 minutes of the episode taught us anything, it's that anything can happen and revenge is best served with wine by Cersei Lannister. Taking out nearly everyone standing in her way, she fulfilled her promise to the septa who harassed her all last season and climbed from the bottom of the political pit to sit on the Iron Throne in a single episode. She may have lost Tommen in a crushing blow, but she is now physically on top (of the Throne).
1. Winner: The Fans (and R+L = J)
Fans were calling the season six finale the greatest episode of all time even before it was over. Although that title is still technically up for grabs, the fans are the ultimate winners of the season finale because it was just so damn enjoyable to watch. R+L=J has finally been confirmed after an entire season of fans itching to follow Ned into the tower and literal years of heavy fan speculation. We knew that Ned would never be dishonorable and sleep with another woman. The episode left fans kicking and screaming with excitement, and we leave "Game of Thrones" already amped for the next season.
