Think back with me to the last time you were asked your opinion on a subject which you had little to no exposure to. Something that was salient, but you hadn't read into it enough to have a genuinely educated idea of how you felt about it. Did you share your thoughts?
You probably didn't deny the opportunity to voice an opinion, but was it justified?
Growing up, we were fed lies about how to discuss current events because we were probably around adults who liked to hear their voices more than they liked to think about the words flowing out of their mouths. It's a human condition, after all. But since when did we allow our flaws to govern our lives when there was a potential solution?
Modern medicine is using state-of-the-art treatments for illnesses that used to take our lives in a week and make it subside in a day. Engineers are constantly giving us incredible pieces of technology that are making our lives easier. How about developing our debate skills a little bit too?
Brace yourself for the next big thing in how to understand and better discuss issues with your peers. Read about it. This new revolutionary discovery will not only help you take in valuable information as a resource for conversation but also give you a basis for making decisions in your life. All I've mentioned, too, are the things it gives you, but they have an impact on everyone you encounter.
Pretentiousness aside, this is seriously something that ails a generation like ours considering the near infinite resources at our disposal thanks to the Internet. With the forum of debate slowly turning into a comedy scene, especially in the presidential race debates, it's easy to fall into the same trap. Debates are for discussing intellectual opinions and supporting those opinions.
Thanks to our greatest role models on national television and the amazing work of media, the public is being treated like children. We point, laugh, and clap for clowns in $10,000 suits who own the country. And, believe it or not, we like it. Or at least the media's pockets full of cash suggests that.
We are all terrified of uneducated decisions, especially with our soon-to-be GOP candidate being boosted by them to maybe holding office. But what are you going to do to change that for the future?
Are you going to spew out nonsense in front of your children to make them jaded about reality? They'll take after you. You can be lazy and feign your stance on issues or you can follow your words with support. In reality, words don't imply depth. You prove the depth of your opinion.
Let's not let ourselves have shallow minds, yeah? Or better yet, don't let your friends have shallow minds, because you're already reading about this issue.
