In the musical" Hamilton," Aaron Burr played by Leslie Odom Jr. sings a song with the lyrics, “We rise and we fall and we break and we make our mistakes. And if there's a reason I'm still alive when everyone who loves me has died I'm willing to wait for it.”
The purpose behind this song is that while there have been ups and downs, and Aaron Burr hasn’t had things come easy for him, he still waits. He is patient and doesn’t give up even if he see the success of his rival Alexander Hamilton. This comes to my mind because we are so used to everything happening fast. We freak out when someone doesn’t instantly text back or if a website doesn’t load fast enough on our phone.
While I have listened to this song many times I have been able to reflect on it and can relate to it. This past year I have had to wait whether it is for job offers, tests or most importantly for people. While the outcome has not been what I wanted sometimes it is still great to learn. Waiting does seem a little boring but I have realized that it is something we must all do. We might think other people are ready, like us, but they aren’t and we need to be patient. In the past I have lived by my time not by other people’s time and looking back at this it made me realize we must be patient. Not just patient with people but with ourselves. We live in a time where we try to start something and go into it too quickly, but what if other people aren’t ready for that situation?
It is great when we want to do something but we need to start looking at other people first. If a person says slow down it doesn’t mean stop it just means we have lots of time lets just worry about now. When I was younger my father always told me “Don’t worry about tomorrow, worry about today.” Looking back at that quote I realize he is correct. We get so worked up about our future that we forget about the present. We just need to sit back and be patient with everything and see what life gives us. I want to go into sports media but I know the only way that can happen is by being patient and working towards it. While we may live in a time and place where everything is at the click of a button we just need to sit back and relax.
Leslie Odom Jr says we need to wait for it and he’s right. We can't keep forcing an outcome because maybe we don’t get that outcome. There is nothing wrong with being patient and it, in fact, is a great trait. If someone told me to wait for them a few years ago I would be hesitant but now I am fine with waiting. Whether it's for a relationship or for a grade I know everything won't happen at once and we need to go at a slow pace. So if you're bugging people about something in life all you need to think about is that patience is key and it is ok if things take some time to develop. Everything will happen eventually you just need to be patient.
