Everyone can assume from the trailers that this children's movie is adorable and entertaining to watch. Although for me, it was much more than that. Not only was the concept of this movie an idea that was outside the box, like having iPhones for the animals and using “MuzzleTime”, but there was much more underlying detail.
The movie takes place from the point of view of Judy Hopps, an ambitious bunny rabbit that is aspired to become a police officer in the city of a modern day animal city called "Zootopia". From the time she was young, she is seen as being too over determined to get a career when no bunny has ever become a police officer and usually resorts to carrot farming. As she gets older, she enters the police academy and is at the top of her class. After her career begins, she eventually gets the opportunity to work on her first big case in the city, which will determine whether or not she will continue with law enforcement. She meets a past sly fox named Nick Wilde who helps her along the way to crack the case and take down the culprit.
Not only does this talk about the need for self-confidence in young people, but the movie also discusses the issue of race. When the predators of Zootopia are seen as threats, they are discriminated against and those that are prey reject them out of their lives. Ultimately, it reteaches the concept that discrimination is still an issue in our country and younger generations need to be aware of it because if nothing changes, we will be stuck in fear.
The plot line may sound basic and typical for Disney to attempt, but it has a lot of underlining richness. We see that Judy Hopps constantly pushes herself no matter what the world stereotypes her as and we see her become a victorious individual throughout her growth. With her sidekick Nick Wilde, he doesn’t know what he wants to become and forces himself to stay with what the world perceives him as. He remains a stagnant character for a good majority of the film but later changes because he sees Judy’s passion for success.
The reason why I think that adults, especially college students, should see this movie is because there are so many of us out there that are both like Judy Hobbs and Nick Wilde. Some of us need the guidance and persistence that Judy has and some of us have the indecisiveness as Nick. We are all stuck in this mind set that we don't have the ability to achieve because of what our peers, professors, parents, and friends tell us and so, we sacrifice our dreams because of what people think about us. Zootopia brought that into light and explained what young adults can do with a little self-reliance and a positive outlook on life.
Zootopia came out on March 4th 2016 and has already gained a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. With a star-studded cast full of actors like Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, and J.K. Simmons, Zootopia is an extremely successful hit for all movie goers. Director Bryon Howard and Rich Moore had a vision to tell an extremely important lesson that children should learn and adults should be reminded of.
