As you may have heard, the new live-action "Beauty and the Beast " remake is featuring a gay character, LeFou. Of course, this has caused an uproar. Theaters in Alabama have canceled screenings of the movie, Russia has banned anyone under 16 from seeing it, and Malaysia wants a censored version. What’s the point?
The "big gay moment" that people are both dreading and waiting for is simply LeFou dancing with a man for all of two seconds. (Of course, I’ve only read reviews so far. Maybe I’m wrong, but I'm probably not.) Regardless of what the moment is, it’s not like it will scar your children. There is not a graphic sex scene in the movie – it’s a movie for children. He doesn’t even kiss anyone. It’s not nearly as big of a deal as everyone is making it out to be.
The main character falls in love with a literal beast, and parents are more worried about a few glances between two men. Guess what, gay people exist. Your children will have to interact with them at some point in their life and seeing a gay person on TV won’t turn your kids gay.
A boycott of "Beauty and the Beast" won’t help your cause. Enough people are going to see it that losing a few bucks won’t really affect the box office. Nice try, though.
