Turning 21 has changed my perspective in life on many different things.
When I was younger, I honestly thought I’d have my whole life together, but that's not the case.
When I was a teenager, I was so eager to be 20 because I thought I’d be some hot-shot PR in New York, wearing only designer clothing, a new hand bag every day, hanging out with your girlfriends every weekend, and have a this awesome luxury apartment over-looking the city, and don’t forget dating one of the dreamiest guys in the whole city.
Unfortunately, my life isn’t anything like the movies portrayed them to be and here’s why.
1. You won’t have the perfect job
As a college student it’s hard to have that perfect job while you’re either still in school, or you just graduated because some positions require you to have more than just a bachelors. Sometimes I wonder how life would be if I was like Elle Woods and could just go straight from college to law school to being a partner in a firm. But it’s all a process and you have to work your way up.
2. Or the nice luxury apartment
If you have looked online the listing’s for luxury apartments in Manhattan is essentially like paying for college all over again. Which for some is a struggle in itself.
3. And the designer clothing
I only have a couple pieces of designer items and they were all gifts. We all can’t be like Rebecca Bloomwood (Confessions of a Shopaholic) and just shop because it makes the world better. The harsh realities of credit card bills will drive you enough to drink.
4.You probably won’t find your prince charming
Dating in the real world is tough. It’s not like the movies, where you just go to bar one night and find the some guy who will just blurt out his whole life story and vice versa; chances are it’s going to take a while and that’s perfectly okay. It’s always good to ride solo and the best you can be before settling down.
5. The perfect girl squad
Unfortunately, you and all your girlfriends from college will eventually journey off to live their own lives because opportunity came knocking, and that’s perfectly fine, be happy for them! At first it may be a little lonely and you’ll miss the times you had together but you’ll start to live for the group chats you used to hate back in the day.
While your 20's may be nothing like movies, it’s okay. Me personally, have another eight or nine years to figure it all out and I’m going to cherish every minute of the journey.
