Why Young Women Should Travel Alone

Don't be afraid of solo adventures

Why Young Women Should Travel Alone
Margot Austin

The past two weeks I have been traveling around the country, alone. I have gone state to state, visiting different friends and it was definitely a great way to kick off the summer.

There is a great stigma surrounding traveling alone, especially as a woman. Most people will sight safety concerns, I have been asked, "do you think it is really wise for you to go out all on your own?"

My response to this criticism is, "why the heck not?" I am a smart, capable young woman, I can change a tire, check my oil, survive in foreign countries and have a pretty handy thing called common sense. I am not inviting danger, I am not going clubbing by myself. I am exploring the country, visiting some of my best friends and benefiting from their generous hospitality.

I am a young woman, I am extremely capable, and I'll be damned if I let anything stop me from exploring.

Another criticism I often hear is that people do not like to do things alone. "Arn't you bored walking around by yourself? Don't you feel awkward sitting at restaurants by yourself?"

Frankly, no. Sometimes there is nothing better than wandering a museum by yourself, you set your own pace, you get to concentrate more on how the art or exhibits make you feel, and less on how your friends might be perceiving them. And although I love going out to dinner with friends, it is so refreshing to sit alone and simply enjoy a meal with your own thoughts, and you get to indulge in a little people watching.

So to all the young women out there, yearning to explore, yet afraid to strike out on their own, I challenge you. Do it. See it all. Be careful, and smart, but do not let anything stop you from seeing all the world has to offer.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
