Social media is everywhere nowadays. You can’t stay off of it and you see it wherever you go. You have your friends, you look at their pictures and like the cute ones. You even write a comment here and there saying congratulations on an important life event that they are having. But when we look at all of these pictures of peoples lives, what are we truly seeing? Social media has consumed our lives and make people believe in a false reality where everything is perfect. I tend to think that social media is the cover of a book, and you cannot judge a book by the cover before you know what is inside.
Society today is based off of social media, everyone can always have access to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to see what is going on in their friends lives. I see that pictures are edited, and statuses are carefully chosen to get the most likes. This is creating a false reality and a false life. Someone might look at an edited picture and be like wow, I want her life, her life is perfect. It is really hard for me to stomach when people say things like this because social media does not tell someone about their real life. A mother might put on a nice picture of her family on Instagram, and people might think it was so easy to take this picture, when in reality it took an hour with many tears and arguments to get that perfect shot. Another girl might be a an amazing athlete at school and might be completely admired by everyone, but she might be afraid to go home at night to face her alcoholic father for fear of getting hurt. Another girl might be beautiful and does really well in school, but she may go home and starve herself at night because she hates the way that her body looks
The point that I am trying to make is that social media makes it really easy for us to forget. It makes it really easy to forget that everyone has struggles in their lives that we may not know about. It is important to be kind to one another, and always remember that everyone has a story that we do not know about. We cannot become immersed in the false cover of social media, we need to try and look at people and try to see the real them and get to know their story. No one has a perfect life, and nothing is ever easy. We need to take the time to get to know someone before we make assumptions about them. You might find that you learn a lot more about someone that way.
