We are living in a generation where it’s popular to dye your hair different colors of the rainbow, take selfies with a selfie stick, and make Dubsmash videos. You would think that people wouldn’t be afraid to be themselves these days, but that is not the case.
We also come from a generation where people hate things that are different. People are cruel towards those who have different views or beliefs. You can’t post your personal opinion online without people posting rude comments saying you’re wrong. I think that regardless of what other people think, you shouldn’t be afraid to be yourself.
When it comes to job interviews, you should show your real personality, not just the robot persona you created to get through the questions. Some companies prefer those with outgoing personalities and those who aren’t afraid to be themselves anyways. Be yourself, because it may determine if you get the job or not.
I think that no matter the situation, it is very important that you stay true to yourself and do what you believe is best for YOU. You shouldn’t choose a major based on what your parents want you to major in. You will hate yourself for it a couple of years down the road. Choose to major in something that you are passionate about so that you will enjoy your career in the future.
In college especially, it is important that you surround yourself with people you want to be with, do things you want to do, and major in what you want to major in. Don’t be afraid to do something because you’re afraid of judgment. You could be missing out on fun opportunities.
If you’re the type of person that obsesses over bands, like me, then don’t be afraid to go to concerts and sing your heart out until you lose your voice. If you still watch 90s cartoons, don’t be afraid to watch them in front of your friends. If you have something about you that is unique, then embrace it.
Be yourself and don’t be ashamed of it. Trust me, you will be glad you listened when you’ve found the right friends and the right support system who will love you no matter what “weird” obsessions you may have.
