Ten months ago as I sat on the bank of the Thames river and watched the moon rise over the Tower Bridge, I finally seemed to realize something; Life is absolutely incredible. It is meant to be filled with passions and hopes, laughs and tears, and memories that will forever stick with you.
If you have never had the chance to travel outside of your country, let me tell you right now that it is not easy. I suppose for some, it might be less stressful than others. But if you're like me and would prefer the comfort of your own home, it will not be a walk in the park. Nothing, and I mean nothing can prepare you for not only the challenges that lie ahead but the joy and self-growth that you will experience as well.
This past November I had the privilege of traveling to Europe with some of my close friends. I was terrified to get on that plane, not knowing what was ahead of me was almost indescribable, and my hands shook as I handed over my passport for the first time. Traveling abroad takes courage and a lot of it, but I have realized that I have become a better person because of my experiences.
Here are a few things that I have realized and learned about traveling:
1. You will learn to appreciate the small things
Whether it be a short twenty minute nap in between activities, or a warm meal that reminds you of home, you learn over time to be grateful for the little things that seem to make the day that much better.
2. Your perspective will change for the greater good
When it comes to perspective, it can be a tricky subject. Especially for me, coming from the US, it was remarkable to see the lifestyle of people halfway across the world. Their world exists on a different and equally unique scale. Changing your perspective does take time, but I think that having these experiences in a way forces you to become a more genuine person, a person who seems to take less for granted and more to heart.
3. You will have once in a lifetime experience
These adventures will stick with you for years to come. Do not let these moments go by, as most will bring unexpected happiness and magnificent joy. If you're traveling with friends, make sure to enjoy their company and realize that you are in this together. Sure, moments alone are always important as they help you keep a stable mind, but nothing beats a friend at your side when you're feeling homesick.
4. You will learn that humility is an incredibly important aspect
There are moments in your travels that will leave you speechless. There are moments when you will realize that you have been blessed in aspects of your life where many others haven't. Let that inspire you to become a better person; to give generously, to love unconditionally.
I hope that everyone has the opportunity to travel in their life, I hope that these lessons can be learned and memories can be made so that we will realize the humility and joy that should be in every aspect of our lives.
