Some people never enter the hookup game, whether it be because they found that special someone or they just prefer to focus on themselves. I applaud these people. It takes an enormous amount of effort to commit to another individual or, even more challenging, to commit to yourself.
It's easy to detach yourself from your emotions and mess around with whoever is available. Sure it can be fun and simple, but ultimately it will leave you missing something, longing for something more. I hear my friends say it all the time “I’m young! Who cares if I fool around a bit? It's not like I'm getting married anytime soon.” Yes, it's true that most of us will go through many relationships before we finally settle down, but it's a cop out to think it's better to just play around.
Some people take pride in their long “list” of partners they've had. Some people, both guys and girls, reveal their extensive body count, almost as if all their hookups are there own miniature fortune. There is nothing wrong with having fun and enjoying yourself, there is just so much more you could be experiencing. It's easy to just fool around, anybody can do it. It's a challenge to manifest and understand real feelings. Yes, it's scary and rarer, but there is great value in connecting with people and forming real relationships.
For those of you that never entered the dysfunctional world of "just having fun," your not missing anything special. It is nothing more than wasting time on pure pleasure. It's a very hedonistic lifestyle that lacks any real substance. Some people spend their time in long lasting meaningful relationships which can be a wonderful experience. An equaly rewarding situation is just working on yourself, exsploring who you are and what your capabal of without the presence of one or multipal partners.
I'm not trying to urge anybody to start searching for “the one” or to be completely celibate, but just to take a step back, relax a bit and focus on you. Stop looking for the next hot thing and reflect on what your limited time is worth and what you want to spend it on.
