When I applied to college, I applied as an English major. I doubted myself, though, thinking maybe I didn't really know what I wanted to do, and how I should pursue a different major instead. I went in undecided, thinking I was smart to not choose a path too early. The next semester I decided to be major in business. It was a choice too heavily based on the fact that I hoped it would lead to a job where I could dress really nice and work alongside men in suits. That, and the fact that I knew business was a safe choice that would surely be lucrative in the future. Needless to say, I hated my semester in business and quit taking business classes as fast as I could. I realized my real love was writing, and switched my major back to English. If only I would have listened to and trusted myself in the first place, I could have saved a lot of credits and time, but I'm still really excited to be currently pursuing a major I am truly passionate about.
I highly recommend that when applying to college, you trust yourself to know what it is you love (and have always loved) best. Then major in that subject, regardless of what your parents think, your friends say, or what a job predictor tells you about the future of that career.
1. You'll be happier
If you pursue that art degree rather than finance (just because you feel like you should), you'll suddenly be doing something you're passionate about every day. What's better than that?!
2. You'll like going to class
Having a major that you like means you'll also take classes on subjects that will to be about things you love. Having classes that actually make you want to get out of your comfy bed and stop watching Netflix is pretty amazing.
3. And you'll actually want to do the reading
Since I switched my major, I have been so interested in my classes, I actually want to read the books I'm assigned for my classes (shocker, I know) because the topics are really interesting to me.
4. You'll get better grades
If you're in classes that you don't want to skip every other week, and that make you actually like doing the homework, you're guaranteed to do better in college. Dean's List, here you come.
5. You'll make more friends
When you're in classes with other people who share the same interests and passions as you, you'll instantly get along with them.
6. You'll be less stressed
Save your happiness, and add a few years to your life by starting a career path you will enjoy working in every day.
7. You'll be making a choice that will positively affect the rest of your life
A college major makes a decision that has the potential to change the rest of your life. You might as well make it something that you love because it could make a huge difference on your life.
8. You'll have a higher chance of success
When you're doing something everyday that you actually love, you're bound to be more successful at it than struggling to do well at something that drives you crazy with frustration or boredom. Hello, promotions.
Choosing a college major is such a big decision, but if you follow what you love, it's the easiest decision you'll ever have to make.
