I went to quite a few proms in my high school days so I have the right to say that everyone should, at least, go to one of their proms. I never went to a prom I didn't have fun at even though I'm no social butterfly or dancing queen. So here are my five rebuttals to why you should go to prom.
1. You can't afford it.
There are so many ways to cut back on money when it comes to prom. Cut out the extras that no one notices: no one notices jewelry or your nails or shoes. Your dress does not have to be hundreds of dollars, I know people who went in some they found at Sears and girls who borrowed dresses from their friends. Do your own hair and makeup or make a friend do it--you're going to sweat it off anyways. Talk to your school about the tickets if that's really an issue because so many times excuses are accepted. Prom on a budget is a thing.
2. You don't have a date.
This is ridiculous! Do not let the absence of someone to slow dance with stop you from making these kinds of memories with your class. Go with some friends and you'll have way more fun than being with someone you need to entertain the whole night.
3. I can't dance.
No one can. No, really they can't dance so don't worry about it. Just jump around to the beat with your friends or find the plenty of other people who hate dancing and stay with them. Prom is so much more than dancing; it's getting all dressed up, it's good food, it's great conversation to music.
4. Prom is stupid.
Prom is a tradition for a reason. It's nice to get all dressed up with all of your friends and eat food and dance. It may be the most memorable experience of your high school career. If it was stupid it would be long gone by now.
5. You won't regret missing it.
You will. You'll regret it when you see all the photos on social media or when it's the only thing to talk about those last few weeks of school.
Prom only happens during those last two years of high school, sometimes only the last one. It's special and fun and made to make memories that might make those high school years seem worth it.
