Why You Should Not Be Culturally Ignorant
Sarah Muncy

Earth is a brilliant melting pot full of diversity. We experience meeting new, fascinating individuals with diverse cultures, different languages, different religions and an all around completely distinctive lifestyle.

It’s crucially important for individuals to understand and be knowledgeable of other people and other cultures, even if it is thousands of miles away and even if it contradicts one’s own opinions and way of life. The world we live in has been consumed of globalization. Globalization itself is a wonderful thing. We have modernized and progressed from linking hands with other countries.

It’s also vital to not be culturally ignorant. In this day in age, we will be faced with conversing and working with other countries. There is a high chance that you will be faced with communicating with foreigners or visiting, or even living, in a foreign country. It is quite a mesmerizing feeling to be submerged in a country that is different from one’s own; it is quite the culture shock.

Now, I am not saying that one should necessarily agree with another culture’s act, especially if it deals with murderous actions such as the Islamic State, but it is quite important to simply educate yourself on the matter. This also ties in with religion. Knowledge is power.

You are not the only individual on this earth. There are billions and billions of people on this world (to be exact, 7.3 billion people are on this planet as we speak). In fact, the individual sitting next to you could be the most mesmerizing person you had ever met. Regardless if he or she has completely opposite viewpoints, completely opposite cultures, yet they are completely beautiful all around.

But what most individuals do not realize is that the events occurring thousands of miles away benefit them in some way or another, whether that be economically, politically or socially.

Being globally aware and being willing to collaborate on an international level will have individuals become more well-rounded. It will encourage people to see and acknowledge alternate perspectives, and it will help them to make educated choices. Not only this, but the information will be beneficial for individuals, and it will remain with them throughout their whole life.

According to the Association of Graduate Recruiters, many businesses cannot find candidates with the essential abilities to work and perform in an intercontinental market place. This should change now.

I am communication major with a concentration in journalism, and I am minoring in international affairs. I have a dream of traveling the world and seeing different places, cultures and people. It’s ultimately mesmerizing.

When my daughter is of age, I will teach her of these things. The history, the life, the culture, the religion, the beauty of individuals all around. Hopefully, we will be living in a different country at some point of our lives. She will not belittle other individuals due to their ethnicity, culture and religion but will be knowledgeable and respectful of them.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
