Why You Should Consider Sorority Recruitment

It’s that time of the year again. Everyone is heading back to campus and before you know it your Instagram feed will be full of sorority girls posting pictures in matching outfits, throwing what they know, and screaming about Bid Day.

If this is totally you, keep on reading. And if you’ve already started to roll your eyes, I still suggest keep on reading. Regardless if you’re an incoming freshman or not, someone with pre-existing ideas and opinions on Greek life or not. I’m not trying to persuade or change your opinion, I’m just here to tell you about the opportunities you can have if you sign up for Sorority recruitment.

Regardless if your school calls it ‘recruitment’ or ‘rush’ it’s the same thing. A bunch of girls sign up, spend days talking to a bunch of other girls, and hope that by the end of it all they’ll have a new home and a bunch of new sisters. In my opinion, you can only come out of the experience as a better person having gained something.

Here’s what can happen if you sign up for recruitment and find a chapter that fits you:

You’ll go through the days talking to a number of girls from a number of sororities. You’ll have good conversations and you’ll have bad conversations. Maybe you’ll fall in love with a house straight away. Maybe you won't. But in the end, you’ll come out with a new place to call home. New friends from other chapters you’ve met along the way, and new sisters to meet and get to lean on when you need to. You can still be friends with your roommates who didn't go Greek, don't worry about that. But if you set out to go Greek and finish recruitment accepting your bid, congratulations! You’re exactly where you want to be.

Here’s what can happen if you sign up for recruitment but for whatever reason don't see it through:

You’ll go through the days talking to a number of girls from a number of sororities. You’ll have good conversations and you’ll have bad conversations. Maybe you have your heart set on one sorority but don't get the bid you want. Maybe halfway through recruitment, you realize that Greek life just isn't for you. Maybe you knew that before the day one parties, maybe you found that out along that way. Whatever the reason, it’s okay to drop out of recruitment, you’ve still come out of it gaining something. You’ve still gotten the chance to talk to and meet some members of Greek life, you’ve gotten a look at it. You’ve definitely met new people that you can still stay friendly with. Maybe it was an active you had a great conversation with, or maybe it was someone else in your recruitment group. And more importantly, you’ve left recruitment knowing what you want, how you feel and where you stand. You can only gain from the experience.

So whether you’re a freshman, a sophomore or even a junior I suggest you consider signing up for recruitment. You’ll never know what you can gain from it!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
