Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and that means chocolate and flower sales are starting to spike, along with lube and condoms- but that's a whole different thing to worry about. As for me, I will be spending Valentine's Day in my bed by myself and watching romantic comedies on Netflix. I've never really been a huge fan of Valentine's Day. It just always seemed like a waste of time and money. You're probably thinking, "Well, Dana, if you had a significant other, maybe you would enjoy it more." Maybe you're right, but I think that people in relationships should be doing things that have been labeled, "Valetine's-ie" all the time, but that's just me.
That's where the idea of Galentine's Day comes into play. A day where all of your gal pals ditch their boyfriends and spend the day celebrating each other, an idea that was invented for Parks & Recreation. My roommate brought this idea to my attention a few weeks ago, and I instantly fell in love with the concept. Not just because I wouldn't be totally bitter once the actual Valentine's Day rolled around, but I would also have the chance to spend the day with my best girl friends.
Let's face it, guys can be real dicks at times. They can be bad communicators, send mixed signals, and sometimes even flake out on plans you have had for months. Don't read me wrong on this, I'm saying that they can be, not that they are. But, there comes a point when a girl just needs some girl time to get her mind straight and just let loose. So, how am I celebrating my first Galentine's Day? I am going to spend it with some of my best gal pals while we each a bunch of food, watch romantic comedies, and tell each other over and over again how much we love one another.
Now, let me take the time to address some of the males that may be reading this article right now. If your girlfriend, wife, or significant other ditches you the day before Valentine's Day to be with her girl friends, do not worry. That doesn't mean she is ditching you for good, it just means she wants to spend time with her friends for a little while. She's not going to go off with other guys or all of a sudden fall off the face of the earth. She loves you, that's why she's in a relationship with you. Just as she gives you space for your guys' nights, give her some space for her Galentine's Day celebration. Trust me, she will love you even more afterward.
So, all my wonderful lady friends and acquaintances out there, it's about time that we start gathering all the girls for a night on the town and celebrating the ones who have actually been there from the start. Go ahead, roll down the windows as you scream "Hollaback Girl" at the top of your lungs. Tell him to not text you for the rest of the night because you're going to focus on your girls tonight. Let loose, have fun, and most importantly, celebrate the love you have for each other.
