I am an avid Netflix watcher, so it's no surprise that I have watched many of the best Netflix series repeatedly. Like many others, I can waste away my days in front of my computer screen binge watching hours of American Horror Story or Bob's Burgers. No show has struck me, however, like Sherlock has. Since I was a kid, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories surrounding Sherlock Holmes have been some of my favorites. Now as an english major, Doyle's stories still captivate me. On January 1, a new episode of Sherlock aired, which was the first Sherlock episode to air since 2014. While "The Abominable Bride" is not my favorite episode, it was still fantastic. Although confusing at times, this special Victorian edition Sherlock was worth the wait. Even though the next season is not scheduled to come out until late 2016 or early 2017, here are five reasons you should be watching Sherlock on Netflix now.
1. It's modern.
Normally when you think of the Sherlock Holmes stories, you think of Victorian times. Sherlock, however, happens in modern day London. By taking place in modern times, it puts a whole new twist on the stories. Viewers are able to relate to what is going on better through the use of modern technology and dialogue. It also allows viewers to feel more connected to what is happening on the screen since Sherlock takes place in modern day London.
2. It's creative.
This is one of the most creative shows I have ever watched. Since it takes place in the modern day writers have had to change everything from Victorian to modern. By doing so, they utilize various items that are modern yet still embody the original Victorian essence of the stories. The episodes also all flow together nicely. Each episode has something important for the whole series embedded within. This makes for exciting plot twist and interesting character development.
3. It's witty.
Sherlock is filled with wit. Sherlock is depicted as being withdrawn and sarcastic, which means that the series is filled with many sarcastic comments. In fact, much of the humor of the show is due to the dry, sarcastic humor deployed throughout must of the series. Without the wit, Sherlock just wouldn't be Sherlock.
4. It's funny
With so much wit, it is not surprising that this show would be considered funny. While the humor of the show may not be for all, those who enjoy sarcasm and dry humor will adore the show. This humor makes Doyle's stories come to life in a unique way. Unlike other shows and movies about Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock creates a unique, humorous atmosphere, which makes viewing much more enjoyable.
5. It has fantastic actors.
Benedict Cumberbatch does a fantastic job at bringing Sherlock into the modern age. While modern Sherlock is uncaring and sarcastic, Cumberbatch still brings a since of classiness to the character. Martin Freeman does a great job of playing Dr. John Watson, as well. The rest of the cast is absolutely fantastic, so bad acting is not a problem when it comes to Sherlock.
While many people already love this show, I know that there are some out there who have not yet seen it. I'm telling you, Sherlock is easily one of the most binge-watchable shows around. I wish you the best for your binge watching, but be prepared to wait another agonizing year for season four once you're done.
