I have been a cinephile since I was a preteen. I am one of those people who watches movies religiously, that is when I am not out hanging with friends or family. However, I don't watch just movies, I like to study them and analyze them to get a clear understanding of what makes them great. I admire the filmmakers, the writers, the producers, and the rest of the crew behind these movies as well as the cast working in front of the camera, so much so that I have worked on some short films of my own.
Attending college, my interest in film grew as I ventured into some classics films by filmmakers such as David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, and John Carpenter to name a few. Watching movies is what I found to be not just a time of relaxation but also a learning experience. As my fascination with how the filmmakers crafted these films into such magnificent works of art grew, influence soared on me and that lead to a thought that kept me up at every night: Hollywood is where I need to be.
Working the Hollywood industry is something I have dreamed about for a long time. I like to tell stories as much as I like to experience them. But most importantly, I see myself as a very creative person, and my creativity inspired me to write short stories. Eventually, my spare time during rainy days would consist of writing screenplays. Growing up, I thought of myself as an actor, that is until I realized I don't have the acting skills. Over time, my love for writing placed my interest in screenwriting.
The most common thing people asked is what kind of films would I write. As much as I enjoy just about every genre, I always saw myself writing for drama and horror. Over the past several years, it seems every movie that hits the multiplexes is either a remake of a good Disney movie or an entry into a long-running superhero franchise. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed hitting the theaters opening night for each entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But I can't help but feel Hollywood has fallen short on originality. This makes look back at the time when Hollywood came out with original ideas that brought us films like Boogie Nights, Magnolia, The Sixth Sense, Fight Club, Mulholland Drive, Memento, Zodiac, Being John Malkovich, the list goes on.
If I were to be a screenwriter, I would write movies based on my own original ideas because I want audiences to experience stories that are not your average summer blockbuster or cheesy love story. Even if I never get recognized at the Academy Awards, I can't imagined the amazing feeling of getting the opportunity to inspire people with a work of art that leaves a long-lasting impression on them after they walk out of the theaters.
My dream is writing for Hollywood is not always met with warm responses. My family has always been quick to remind me how difficult to get into the industry. They may be right, let's be honest, if finding a path in the industry was easy, everyone would do it. Film is a passion I continue to pursue in hopes that one day, no matter how long it takes, I would find a place in entertainment. Of course, I will always have a back-up plan if it never works out.
