Every season the millennial generation finds a new trend to over indulge in for a short span of time, then ultimately abandon to join the graveyard of fads past. This year, the nation was swept with a new and unique trend: political passion. People across the country joined the political revolution that was presented by presidential hopeful, Bernie Sanders.
Sanders brought a new agenda to the table, full of fresh ideas and inspiration. Sanders proposed universal health care, and received praise from the younger generation who struggled to afford proper medical care. Sanders voiced for free college tuition, and students rejoiced. Sanders advocated for justice, and peace, and inclusion for every person in this great country. He was a mover and a shaker, and a political game changer that caught the attention of millennials who were desperate for a voice.
Sanders fought hard for what he believed in, as did his supporters. Unfortunately, the world is not a place where your efforts are always rewarded in the way we had imagined. After Clinton’s nomination at the Democratic National Convention, many people lost hope. I, personally, felt as if all of my hard work for his campaign wasn’t enough. Like I could’ve done more. Maybe if I had taken the time to knock on a few more doors or call a few more voters, this wouldn’t have happened.
It took time to accept what happened. I refused to remove the posters lazily thumbtacked to my walls, praying that this was a mistake that would soon be corrected and justice would be restored. But this was not a superhero comic where our sweet old defender came to save the day. I had to tell myself that this huge political revolution was coming to an end. But I learned that simply was not true. This movement had only begun. In stirring the hearts of millennials, Sanders banded a force of some of the most motivated, compassionate, and hard working people this country has to offer. We have always been searching for someone to share what we thought was right, and for a leader that not only had a voice, but heard ours and valued the needs of people who didn’t ever feel valued by the people who were supposed to represent them. He was it. Sanders gave new ideas to a corrupt political system, and proposed policies that helped everyone, not just a select few citizens. He did all of this under the slogan “A Future To Believe In.” That future is still real.
Every day I see my peers engaging in conversation that was never discussed before becoming politically involved with Sanders, young adults who were suddenly passionate about healthcare, economic equality, and equal opportunity. I read of politicians who have stood behind these principles surging in the polls, and winning the admiration of voters with their honest morals. There is a political revolution happening like nothing this nation has ever seen, and I truly believe that our future will be brighter because of it.
