I really love when I log into my Facebook and see dozens of memes on my timeline. But, what I love even more are the memes that don't even have a point! Yes, I'm talking about the memes that are pictures of a completely random object with a caption that says something like "Tag a friend so they have to go on their phone and look at this picture of ___ for no reason." This trend is undoubtedly unnecessary and confusing, but people seem to love to tag their friends in these posts just to annoy them.
Has it really come to this, where interaction on social media is reduced to seeing how much friends can annoy each other with useless, substanceless content? If the goal of the meme is to cause people to use their phones more than they usually would, shouldn't we be concerned? Don't we think people use their phones enough as it is? People are always told to put the phone down and try to disconnect from it instead of remaining glued to the screen. Now, people are encouraged to check their Facebook timelines to look at an image just to realize they did it for nothing and that their friend wanted to see how they would react.
An important point that can be brought up is the idea that some may say most of the content people tag each other in is also useless and pointless, so would this trend just be a continuation of this belief or is it something entirely different?
Personally, I don't enjoy opening my Facebook to countless pictures of things such as a chicken nugget, Noonoo, and a 'dogerito,' which I don't even know what it is, with text telling us to tag a friend just to annoy or ruin their day. I would much rather see videos of puppies or food because at least there's some point to it being on my timeline. I know I'm not the only one who enjoys messing with their friends, but I think it's time everyone realizes that these memes aren't funny to pretty much anyone in the situation. Here's to hoping this trend will fade sooner rather than later.
