If you have a friend who runs, you've probably asked them why they like to run, and if your friend is anyone like me, they just give the incredulous answer of "why wouldn't I, it's fun" or "running and I have a hate hate relationship" (if I'm injured).
In reality, it's not that simple, and I'm not alone; just look at the over 2 million people who pledged to run on Global Running Day (June 1st). I decided to ask some runners I've met over the years a simple question- Why do you run? Here were some answers... and if you still think runners are insane, then so be it.
We run to...
Build Confidence
“I run because it boosts my self-esteem. There is a great sense of accomplishment that comes along with finishing a run or a race, and it makes me feel more confident.” - Mary West, RPI Track
Whether it is a trail run, track workout, or a race, it always feels good to finish a run.
Overcome Obstacles
“I run to feel. I run because it is a physical obstacle I can work through when most things in life are mental.” - Katherine Clemente, RPI Track
Although running is a mental sport to me also, there is a simple fact- the stronger you get, the better you will become. You work hard everyday to get in shape and are rewarded with the runner you become.
It's Universal
“The incredible support system. I live in Korea, but I found a marathon group to run with. Most of them don't speak English, and my Korean isn't very good, but the support is still there even if the communication isn't.” – Jenny Tom, Teacher
This is what I call the runners nation, and its open to anyone who laces up and runs to join. I can't count the number of friends I've made from the sport.
Stretch Your Limits
“I do it to push myself to my fundamental limit. I want to be able to say I've done this to the best of my ability. As for why running, because it is a very simple and elegant physical activity.” – Michael Lam, Half-Marathon Runner
When it comes to distances and times, the numbers can't lie. You know when you've done your personal best and you can always reach to beat it again and again.
Become Stronger
“To push myself in uncomfortable circumstances." – Yorkbell Jaramillo, Winged Foot Camp Counselor
Have you ever heard the phrase "My sport is your punushment?" Running is tiring, mentally and physically. It's when you're uncomfortable and you want to stop that you push yourself and become stronger.
Escape and Relax
“It's great to get away from the real world for a bit, it lets me blow off some steam, and see what I'm capable of… and it doesn't require a gym.” – Mara Giga, RPI Track
Whenever I'm overwhelmed or stressed, I always feel better after a run- it's a simple way to relax and forget everything else, even if it's just for an hour or two.
Find Adventure
“And I run because I get to see trails and things you could never enjoy from a car.” – Amanda Beth, 10k Runner
There's something magical about running on a trail at sunrise- even more so when a family of deer come to join you (true story). You never know what you're going to find on a run.
Explore
“It's the best way to explore new places.” – Michael Fitzpatrick, Winged Foot Camp Counselor
Whether it was on the boardwalk along the Mediterranean in Nice, in the state park near my home, or along the roads near the running camp I went to for two summers (Winged Foot Cross Country and Jumps Camp), some of my best exploring was done while running.
Look Good, Feel Good
“To make sure the dad bod doesn't take over.” – Rory MacCarthy, RPI Track
“To look young when I'm old.” – Truvaurnie Proctor, Winged Foot Camp Counselor
“I run so I can eat more, haha.” – Vera Titze, RPI Track
“It keeps me young.” – Tamara Wagner Winawe, pilates instructor, Winged Foot Camp Director
“It keeps me in shape. I'm able to have more stamina and strength...and it makes workouts easier if my stamina is higher.” - Aurora Freedman, RPI Track
From any skill level to any age, running is a great workout that can keep you happy and healthy, which I'm sure you've all heard before. Just remember that it really can be fun
Have Fun!
As for me, the most important reason I run is because I've never had a time where I didn't feel better after a workout, and when I'm having a really good day, running makes me feel like I can fly; also, the friends I've made through running are the best that I could ask for!
