A friend of mine's mom once told me and another friend that we need to watch the news because we are the generation that is going to be effected by it, and she couldn’t have been more right. In a world of Netflix and reality TV, tuning into Channel 7 News isn’t as tempting as binge watching all ten seasons of FRIENDS. The reason behind our lack of overall knowledge on worldly affairs is not always because this generation is “lazy” or “ignorant”, but when it comes to real life issues we don’t want to accept the fact that in life, we have real issues. It’s more comforting to watch the relationship of the Rachel and Ross duo progress than it is to watch what country is currently under attack. Sometimes, it’s easier to just pretend tragedy and violence doesn’t exist. It may be difficult to bring ourselves to do but we should all be educated in the world that will one day become ours. Know that this is just a hand full of the many newsworthy events going on in the world today.
Maybe watching the news every night isn’t your thing, the good news (because the world needs some of that) is that you can get CNN or FOX and many other news outlets as apps on your phone or seek out news websites such as this one, and before you go to bed at night try scrolling through the news instead of Instagram. You’ll be better informed and have something more worthwhile to talk about than what Becky did at that party last night.
