“High school? Really? Why?”
I have heard it before and I am sure I will hear it again. Why in the world would I want to teach high school? Well, I will tell you why my desire to teach still burns in my heart, despite what people say.
Everyone wants to change the world, including myself. At the end of our lives, we hope to have positively affected this place in some way, shape, or form. To me, you do not have to be a superhero to change the world. You don’t have to end world hunger, create world peace, and save every child in need, even though that would be nice.
One person. I believe if you affect one person, you should be proud. If I can change one person's life, then I will be happy.
I believe one of the best ways to influence people is through teaching. I believe this because I was that student, I was the one who walked in a classroom and felt safe because of my teacher. My senior year English teacher never once passed judgment on a student. He encouraged everyone to take chances and be themselves. Students gravitated toward him, and I never once heard a bad thing said about him. Every day he gave us a clean slate. I went to him for advice and he was always there to give me his unbiased opinion, even when he didn’t agree with me. He truly was the last thing that really pushed me to want to pursue secondary education.
I want to be that teacher for kids that just need people to believe in them. I think high school is a make it or break it point for a lot of kids and if I can encourage them to take a chance, be themselves, and try their best to be successful, it would mean the world to me. I would love to be that helping hand, listening ear, and advisor for some of the kids who don’t have that, because then I will have done a good job here on earth. I think the power of education is incredible and I believe that the teacher has the ability to change the students outlook on the subject, they can make all the difference in the world. You can always tell when a teacher has a true passion for their job, and those are the type of teachers we need more of. We need more teachers that actually want to teach and make their students better people. I have had my fair share of teachers who hate their jobs, and it really can ruin the class. I wish to be the teacher that loves what she does and truly cares about her students. If I have the power to change one child’s life, then I will be happy, and I think I can find that in the classroom.
