There has been countless times where I have been around a girl who does not like another girl and she calls her a basic bitch or just the word basic. In girl world, and even guys know this, being called basic is the ultimate insult. However, I am here to try to put an end to this idiotic trend of labeling people as basic.
There are many reasons why this trend is dumb. First of all, the phrase basic bitch right off the bat implies conformity. Since when has conformity been a bad thing? Newsflash everyone, the whole world runs on conformity. People come up with original ideas sure, but, that idea sprang from something else they originally saw. Everything in the world kind of intertwines. Countless people have iPhones, so what, now they are all basic? It seems that in our minds going with the status quo is now always a bad choice and that just simply is not true. The biggest concern with this trend however is the fact that only women do this to other women. I do not typically adhere to all the values of what you would call feminism, but I think that this problem touches those waters. One could even compare this to "slut shaming." By calling one another basic as females, we undermine ourselves and our gender.
In addition, people forget that copying someone is one of the highest forms of flattery. We all hated when we were younger and another kid would copy us and that situation still can be found today. But I think that it is time for us to admit that inside we are all basic. We all are part of some type of conformity.
The trade marks of someone who is basic are not really as obvious as everyone would think. I guess in girl world it means someone who is not special or average, but since when does following trends make someone simply average? In fact, some people would even view this thought a completely different way. Some would say if you are not following trends, you are not special. Us women are so quick to call someone basic, but yet here we sit with our white converse ( you all know that you have them), our Starbucks coffees, or insert common girl item here.
Calling someone basic just because they adhere to the current trends is uncalled for and down right hypocritical.
Being basic is not wrong, in fact, it is normal.
