The original "Ghostbusters" movie premiered in 1984 and instantly became a cult classic. Now thirty-two years later the classic paranormal film has been vamped up and remade with a gender bend twist.

The four main characters of the newest "Ghostbusters" are women.

When the reboot of the film was first announced there was a lot of skepticism that followed. The first wave of skepticism came because fans were unsure of a classic movie being remade and tweaked. The second wave came when it was announced that the cast would be female Ghostbusters. There was plenty controversy over a simple reboot, but rebooting the franchise with the opposite gender caused an uproar.

Critics of the gender reversal were outspoken in saying they felt the new twist would destroy the franchise because "Women ruin everything." Twitter users stated that having "chicks" and "corny jokes" would ruin the movie.

However critics feel about the movie, whether they didn't like the casting, the script, or the special effects used, one thing that cannot be denied is the fact that this movie breaks through Hollywood stereotypes, and helps further the message of women empowerment.

Right off the bat three of the four main characters are scientists with PhD's in physics. These women are educated, intelligent, hardworking, and they're actually funny!

In most movies women that are smart are played out to either be socially awkward, workaholics, or are stone cold and emotionally numb people. If a woman is funny, she's either stupid and being laughed at, they're a klutz, or just the one dimensional 'funny' character only there for comic relief. And if they're both of those things, they're usually the antagonist and are known to deceive people.

And Heaven forbid a female character is smart, funny andattractive, because that usually doesn't happen in Hollywood movies.

If an attractive woman is in a movie she's either a gold digger, an air head, a princess, a sex worker, a woman who sleeps around and isn't respected by any of the other characters, or she's solely there to have those five seconds of screen time that turns a 'PG-13' movie into an 'R' rated one.

Growing up watching these movies and how they portrayed women made me believe that you had to pick between those three options: to be funny, smart or attractive. After you picked one of those characteristics, you could finally find a man and be happy, and if you didn't have a man you would die a miserable old hag.

It gives me so much hope for the future generation with these stereotypes broken in this movie.

The new Ghostbusters didn't need a man to come rescue them or complete them. These women weren't some overly sexualized bimbo's. They were brave, heroic and smart. They were engineers, physicists, and one of the characters was even a professor at an Ivy League school.

Little girls are going to watch this movie and look up to these four women and want to be just like them. It's going to encourage girls to be interested in STEM programs, and break the stereotypes movies and other forms of media has fed them.

You can love the original "Ghostbusters" movie and hate the reboot all you want, but there's no denying that this new generation of Ghostbusters has helped break down the doors of female Hollywood stereotypes.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
