The anticipation for the new "Ghostbusters" film had been building up inside of me for quite a while- except this time around the prospect for this film was different from any other film in my past. This time around I truly wanted to see if the new "Ghostbusters" film would do the original film justice.
Despite the trailer for this film being what seemed to be the most disliked trailer in YouTube history, and despite the fact the film was a reboot and not a continuation of the original series, I came into this movie with an open mind. I, unfortunately, walked out wishing I could get back the time I spent watching this film.
Let me start off with the positives of the movie.
The central cast to the new "Ghostbusters" has been controversial from the initial reveal that It would be an all female cast. I would like to say overall that the Ghostbusters within the film were amazing. Among the female cast, Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones were the standouts of the movie. I laughed at most if not all of their "bits" during the movie and they seemed to be the most organic out of the new Ghostbusters.
Chris Hemsworth's performance was also very good despite the fact he was made so dumb within the movie, possibly as a way to further showcase the intelligence of the female leads.
Now, to the vast amount of negatives of this film.
Melissa McCarthy is one of my least favorite actresses in the film industry and to me, it seems in this movie and every comedic role she has ever been in, her dialogue and jokes come across as forced. In other words, her character just screams,"Hey look at me, I'm funny."
Also the ghost in the film, most notably Slimer, looked so awful that it was almost cringe worthy - and immediately I thought that the original Slimer was leagues ahead of this latest portrayal.
The cameos of the original cast were just half baked and awful, other than Bill Murray's cameo, and the only effect the cameos did have on me was that I wished they would have used the original cast even more.
Was this movie a good idea? The answer is no. I do not recommend for anyone to see this movie, and rather save money. Girls across the world have better role models to look up to than fictional ghost hunters. If only there was a woman running for president for young girls to look up to. Oh, wait ...
The film busted what was my hopes of seeing a good "Ghostbusters" movie. In all fairness, this movie does not deserve all the hate it got from the trailer, but it does deserve some.
Out of all the summer movies, this was by far the most disappointing and makes me realize a bigger issue going on in filmmaking: a lack of originality.
