If you’re a fan of the boy band, One Direction like I am or even check social media periodically, you are probably tired of seeing photos of band member Louis Tomlinson walking around Los Angeles. Ever since July 2015, when "People" magazine broke the news that Tomlinson was going to be having a baby, his photo continues to be constantly splashed across various tabloids. Considering the fact that it is now April 2016— almost a year since the news of the baby was announced and three months since his son was born—there is one question that is on my mind and the mind of just about every other One Direction fan: why is the media still focusing on Tomlinson?
I have never seen such a media stir over a celebrity’s baby being born. Is it because Tomlinson had the child with his supposed “fling” Briana Jungwirth? Is it because she’s American, and he is from the other side of the pond? Is it because 90 percent of the One Direction fandom is convinced that Tomlinson and bandmate Harry Styles are in a relationship that continues to be hidden from the public after six years?
As far as I’m concerned, Tomlinson is one of the least recognizable faces of One Direction—Styles has the image that precedes him as a result of their team marketing him as “the flirt” and “the womanizer.” Tomlinson has always stayed more behind-the-scenes, falling off the grid for months at a time when they were on break. So you would expect nothing different now that the band is on an extended hiatus and Tomlinson is probably up to his elbows in diapers. Nevertheless, that is clearly not the case and I’m still trying to wrap my head around why it is considered noteworthy for Tomlinson to be chronicled carrying a baby carriage or pushing a stroller with his son in it at least two times a week.
He is never alone, too. In fact, it’s practically impossible to miss him when you see his friend with the flaming red hair and his hulk bodyguard walking less than five feet away from him at all times. That is the regular cast of characters; he also has paraded around with his girlfriend, Danielle Campbell and on occasion, his sister… as well as the rest of his family.
My only answer to the question of why the media is still focusing on Tomlinson after all this time is perhaps for the sake of amusement. At this point, the only reasonable explanation is that the photos are to fuel our incredulity and boy, is that working. The families of the mother and Tomlinson have asked for privacy, yet he’s constantly returning to Calabasas Commons, where paparazzi from TMZ are somehow always on time for a quick photo-op, and Jungwirth is constantly answering questions about her personal life and their son on different social media platforms so… take from that what you will. Does any of the aforementioned make sense for a new parent to be doing? I don’t think so, but who’s to say what the hidden agenda could be if there is one at all? All I know is that when there are articles devoted to talking about a Band-Aid on Tomlinson’s hand that indicates him having drawn blood—despite it being publicly known that he has never had a paternity test for the child— it must be an awfully slow news day.
