Trump, Drumph, The Donald, Dump Trump, Trump Trump, blah blah blech. Who put such a man as Donald J. Trump on the forefront of the Republican presidential nomination and why is he reaching so many people?
Let’s step back first. Trump, a business magnate and seeming success story has everything that any business tycoon (or other average American) might desire: wealth, power, security, privilege. It really is an iteration, albeit a fractured vision, of the American dream. However, Trump didn’t earn his American dream by himself. It was handed to him from his father, who, an immigrant, worked hard at his employment and was able to gain a significant amount of wealth for his time. However, as the United States seems to have it, money always talks. Fast forward to the last 15 years or so. Trump has been on numerous TV and movie spots, giving him heightened fame and fortune, and so close as to even give him his own TV show for SEVEN seasons. All the while, he has had businesses fail and different ventures dip down, yet still maintains himself as a successful bourgeois celebrity whose C-List status earns him a mediocre spot in the minds of Americans.
But why is he up? Why does he have so much support behind him? The truth is, he doesn’t. His facade of media attention really stands true to the statement of “any coverage is good coverage,” and his coverage is good. Very good. He is almost a master at knowing what extremist comments to say and how to say them. The only true reason why we even pay attention to him is because of the media manipulating his words and gravitating towards him. If he were some kind of a joke candidate, no one would take him seriously, and the ones that do are simply fearful of a cultural revolution in the United States. Trump is not about whether he is a serious candidate or not, it’s about his ability as a mediocre celebrity to manipulate people into thinking that he is the most sensible candidate for the job and by abusing the public's fears of another repeat of the September 11th attacks, or a complete takeover of the US by some external force. He makes people hate and fear again by using scare tactics to slowly reveal the nasty underbelly of the politically involved. I never saw anything like this happen when Obama and McCain went for the presidency back in ‘08. The closest thing to an extremist organization was the Tea Party, and they were a small faction who really annoyed the heck out of the U.S. and its voters. Now activist groups both left and right are acting up and becoming more vocal in their speech, really revealing to the world (thanks to globalization and the Internet) how foolish the US can really be.
However, there is a catch. The fall of Trump will come with either a major sigh of relief, or the collapse of the GOP and a sharp change of the basis of American culture as we know it. This is a huge turning point in American culture, and something that will be remembered as a huge breaking point in American society in general. Who knows what will ensue after the election is over- all we know is that America will never be the same after this.
