On Tuesday morning, TCU defensive end Devonte Fields was attacked and robbed at his house on the 3200 block of University Drive. While the crime was the second reported in nearly 24 hours close to the TCU campus, the details of the crime and the way it is being handled is even more of a mystery.
Fields, who went outside to start his car before returning to his house, was hit upside the head with a semi-automatic pistol from one of the suspects behind him. Fields was then assaulted by two of the three suspects, while the third stole items from the house including an Xbox, according to the Fort Worth Police Department Incident Report.
Afterwards, one of the suspects was grabbed by Fields, while five shots were fired into the air. The three suspects then fled the scene in an older black Honda car. Fields, who originally consented to a search by FWPD, decided to forego the search after the police’s arrival. Fields also stated that he did not want to press charges against the suspects involved.
While the campus can safely know that its star defensive end is safe and sound, there is cause for concern when it comes to Fields and the rest of the football team. The fact that the victim would not want to press charges against the suspects raises many questions around the event that took place and what is going on behind the scenes.
If foul play has been taking place amongst the suspects and Fields, it is just another distraction for the team. Two years after the campus-wide drug bust, which resulted in four players being dismissed from the team, the football program has been under a watchful eye. Unfortunately, incidences like these are the last thing coach Patterson and the staff need.
For Fields, this is another dent to his promising career at TCU. Fields received a two-game suspension at the beginning of last season as a result of violating university and team policy. Fields then went down midseason with a season-ending injury. However, for a player who was once considered the next great defensive player to come out of TCU, he has made it difficult off the field for many to take him seriously. While there are questions to be answered, the TCU defensive end must do his best to turn his career and act around after a disappointing sophomore season.
