One of my favorite pastimes, admittedly, is reading TSM and TFM articles. At least once a day, if not more, I am filling my mind with articles ranging from “What your go-to drink says about you” to “Top 10 things guys want in a formal date.” Now, not all of these articles are as horrible as you may believe—some are actually quite entertaining and lead to pretty useful information (occasionally).
Just the other day, I was scrolling through my social media when I came across a TFM article written by one of their female interns that was answering questions about what a guy could do to land a girl. Because I was pretty bored, I clicked on it and began reading. It was filled with this female writer rating every single person with a number ranging from one to 10. I was disgusted. I have heard of the one-to-10 scale several times, have probably been rated on it and have probably rated others on it as well. But it really struck me as odd that there are people out there creating relationships solely on the “number” of the appearance of a person based on a made-up scale.
Where do we get off judging someone’s appearance one day by giving them a number? Just because I rolled out of bed 10 minutes before my 8 a.m. class after staying up all night watching Netflix and I just so happen to look like I got hit by a train in class that day, does not mean anything. Making me a “solid four” for that particular day doesn’t mean I can’t turn heads when I actually do my hair and makeup and put on decent clothes (making me a seven or whatever you want to call it!). Appearance should not determine if we acknowledge someone’s existence or not. You never know what someone has going on in their lives and internal things like that can definitely affect someone’s outward appearance.
The one-to-10 scale is deprecating to whomever it is applied to and is taken way too seriously in our society. God did not call on us to judge whether or not we are going to talk to someone based on a scale of numbers depicting a person’s appearance.
Genesis 1:21: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
Each person was and is created in God’s very own image. And that image is a pretty amazing one if you ask me. Each and every person was created to serve our one, true and awesome God, and we should be delighted to get to do that with everyone we have the privilege of meeting. Everyone you will ever meet has their own amazing life to live and will have, and probably already does have, a mind-blowing story to tell one day. Their number on a made-up attractiveness scale does not even come close to defining anything about who they are.
So, let’s just stop with the whole scale. If you think someone isn’t so attractive then that is OK, and if you think someone is the hottest thing since sliced bread then good for you too! Let’s just all realize that there is someone out there for everyone and that we are all beautifully unique in our own, God-made ways.
