Thanksgiving could single handedly be one of the greatest holidays; it revolves solely around giving thanks, being with those you love most and sharing delicious plates of home cooked food. Yet just when you think it couldn’t get any better—you experience Thanksgiving as a college student.
When you to go to school, most of us not only leave behind our family and friends, but the comforts of home as well. For a large percentage of college students their first time going home since starting school is Thanksgiving break, adding a sentimental edge. 1. Seeing Friends
Naturally the first thing any returning college students wants to do is rush home, drop their bags, grab the keys and go see their friends. Although modern technology allows everyone to stay in touch, FaceTime on an iPhone just isn’t the same as real face time with your best friends
2. Doing Laundry
Doing laundry is easily one of the most difficult tasks for a college student to complete. Whether it is sorting your clothes properly so everything white that you own doesn’t turn pink, or remembering to pick your clothes up from the laundry room—it’s a task that no college students wants to do. Therefor when Thanksgiving rolls around, you can roll a suitcase full of dirty clothes through your front door knowing everything is going to end up okay.
3. Eating Real Food
Not only does Thanksgiving allow, and even promote, you stuffing your face with anything imaginable—it also gives college students the opportunity to eat real home cooked food. Although they may claim they “cook” in their dorm, or eat out, everything fails in comparison to a meal cooked at home. Ramen for dinner with left over Ben and Jerry’s, although completely acceptable here, isn’t what most consider a proper meal.
4. Driving
For most college students around the country, the sweet privilege of being able to drive when you want, where you want, is taken away when you step foot in your freshman dorm. Therefor nothing beats coming home for Thanksgiving break, texting in your group chat that you’ll pick everyone up, grabbing the keys and heading to the garage.
5. Acting like a High School Student
Although not many will admit it, going home on thanksgiving break allows you to re-live your carefree high school nights one last time, and see your old football team play in the famous turkey bowl. For the first time in a while its nice to go meet up at your friends house that isn’t filled with his fraternity brothers or her sorority sisters.
6. Getting into Trouble with Family
Nothing beats creating a little holiday mischief with your family. Whether that means switching the salt and sugar, fiddling with the decorations outside, or feeding your little cousins too much sugar—nothing quite compares. A little family rivalry over a few pranks never hurt anybody.
7. Seeing Every Doctor Possible
Coming home for the holiday’s means you get to see your family, friends, and every childhood doctor you’ve ever known. Somehow breaks became the time when you are poked and prodded to make sure that college didn’t turn you into some type of mutant robot.
8. Getting Pampered
Coming home from college for the first time since the summer means a lot to most parents, and therefor Thanksgiving because the most pampered weekend of your life. Not only do they arrange to have your favorite meal prepared, allow you to do and go anywhere you please, but also treat you to your favorite things.
