Hello, my name is Megan Banks and I have wanted to be a teacher for most of my life. By most of my life, I mean for as long as I have been able to talk. Which, according to my mother, was at about the age of two. The following piece is to help you understand why I want to teach.
In most classrooms, there is at least one kid who thinks they know everything, is super bossy, and is not afraid to correct their teacher. That has been me my entire life. When I was younger, I always wanted to play school and I had to be the teacher. I have always had a yearning to be the one in the front of the room making the calls. I guess you could say, I was born ready for the job.
I have always loved working with children. When I was twelve, I started to babysit my neighbor's children. This gave me my first chance to work with children other than my family. I started to learn behaviors of children and how to handle them. Babysitting is where I learned that if it gets too quiet someone is probably up to something and that both sides of the story matter.
Recently, I had to complete some field observations for a class. I spent thirty hours getting to know a class full of children. Each student was vastly different from the others. I learned how much children already know before five. I got to see that some children are absolutely brilliant, but sometimes need a guiding hand as their minds tend to wonder.
My grandmother worked in a school system. My mother is a special education teacher. One of my siblings has autism spectrum disorder. These are all important people to me. The school system is very important to them. Growing up I always thought that schools were such amazing places. I loved to visit my mother at her school because I thought it was so cool that she got to work in a school. I had a teacher that I absolutely adored in the 5th and 6th grade. She found ways of making boring subjects more interesting and helped my class to believe we could achieve anything. For that, I will be forever grateful.
As previously stated I love being in a school, it feels like my home away from home. I like to think I am a fairly happy and enthusiastic person which are both important things to be if one wishes to teach. I love grading things and often helped my junior high English teacher grade for fun. I love continually learning new things every day. Helping people is one of those things that has always come easy to me.
I think that the job of a teacher is not only to teach students. A teacher must also make sure that each and every student knows that they are cared about. A teacher should make their room feel like a safe place as some children do not have a safe place to go home to. A classroom should be a fun place where students learn. I feel as though I can and will be able to provide that to all who enter my classroom.
Every change that occurs begins with one person or thing at a time. The children of today are the future of tomorrow. This is why they are so important. A teacher does not just impact one person. They teach many who go on to make changes. Teachers inspire others to do great things and teach them that these things exist in the first place. That is why teachers are important. Teachers inspire students to want to make the world a better place.
