It's no surprise that the organization Planned Parenthood has been seen as a controversial topic, mostly because it provides abortion services, but this organization does so much more than that.
Planned Parenthood provides: annual exams, birth-control, morning-after-pills, fertility awareness education, HPV and Hepatitis B vaccines, pap tests, STD testing/treatment, UTI testing/treatment, pregnancy testing, options counseling and so much more.
The best part, I think, about Planned Parenthood is that it takes into consideration the patient's ability to pay because it believes everyone should have access to its services regardless of their ability to pay.
And yet, it seems Planned Parenthood's respectability as an organization is only based on one thing: it provides abortions.
I first went to Planned Parenthood at the age of 16. I was young, but I was, and still am, a firm believer in "better safe than sorry." So, I started taking the pill. I was working at Subway during this time and I didn't make very much money, so I was grateful to be able to receive birth control for free from this organization.
I took my healthcare into my own hands. I decided for myself that I was going to take full advantage of this organization to better protect myself from unwanted pregnancy and to gain knowledge about sexual education.
Fast forward a few years and I am about to graduate from college. I still use Planned Parenthood as my birth control and check-ups provider. Why wouldn't I? It's an amazing organization. I always get my birth control on time, it understands I'm a busy (and poor) college student and it works with me on that. It understands that my healthcare is important. It understands that what I decide to do with my body is my own damn business—nobody else's.
Planned Parenthood offers safe and legal abortions, but it also advocates for increasing access to birth control, emergency contraception, promoting comprehensive sex education in our schools, and making affordable health care a reality for all.
It is a healthcare organization that believes in providing affordable options to women in need. I support options, a woman's right to choose what she does with her own body, women who make the conscious decision to take their healthcare into their own hands and who need help despite their financial status, and I support Planned Parenthood.
