Everywhere I turn, I get questioned about: Why is Bernie still in the race? How could I still support a losing candidate? Why should Hillary still have to face him? Why aren’t we moving on to face Trump? So here are a list of reasons why Bernie is still in the race and why his supporters are still by his side.
1. The Delegate Count
If you do not take the superdelegates into account the count does not look like impossible odds for Bernie. The superdelegates can still change their votes until the convention, so they are not locked in stone, as some people would lead you to believe. Bernie has been gaining more superdelegates and as he continues to win more states he will gain even more super delegates.
2. Momentum
People in politics are constantly talking about momentum, because momentum can dramatically change a race. The momentum is with Bernie. Recently, Bernie has been getting more media attention and winning more states. He has won seven of the last nine contests. This is HUGE!
3. Changing A Rigged System
The democrat’s nominating process has come under a lot of fire lately. Having a group of elites that get to influence the people’s choice seems to be undemocratic. One of the reasons that superdelegates have never been taken out of the process is that they have never decided an election. They have influenced this primary dramatically because of Hillary’s huge lead over Bernie in superdelegates makes it look like the race is over. If Bernie stays in the race and wins more delegates through primaries, then it might come down to the superdelegates. Imagine if Bernie won more delegates than Hillary through people’s votes, but lost due to superdelegates. This would be an outrage, but it could be enough of a push to get rid of superdelegates. Sometimes changing a system does not require you to win, but to fight on after a tough loss.
4. Hillary Is Moving Left
This primary contest has pushed Hillary to the left on many issues. SNL recently did a skit where Hillary morphed into Bernie. Hillary is sounding more like Bernie about trade agreements such as the TPP, the minimum wage, a need to regulate wall street and many other issues.
5. The Issues
This is by far the most important reason I still support Bernie and believe he should continue his fight for a political revolution. I strongly support his vision for our country. He believes that we should help all people and that we should fight for every citizen. He believes that we need to work harder to educate our children instead of jailing our children. He believes that you should be able to support a family on a minimum wage job instead of being forced to be a part of the working poor. He believes in protecting the planet instead of destroying it at the behest of large companies trying to make a profit. He believes in a political revolution that has inspired so many young people to believe in the future of politics for the first time. I believe we need a political revolution, so whether or not we elect Sanders, I will continue to support Bernie’s ideas.
