Why 'Spring Awakening' Changed My Life

And why everyone should go see it.

Why 'Spring Awakening' Changed My Life

Based on the German play of the same name, "Spring Awakening," is a musical focused around teenage sexuality and what it means to grow up. The original production went on to win many awards including 8 Tonys. Book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, the musical, which opened on Broadway in 2006, has inspired and touched lives all the way to its Deaf West Revival in 2015. "Spring Awakening" takes place in late-19th century Germany, sending its audience through a musical journey.

1. "Spring Awakening" takes leaps in tackling sexuality like no other production.

2. It addresses homosexuality in times when no one would have dared talked about it.

I promise this is the last kissing gif.

3. It displays how not knowing how to handle sexual desires can truly take over someone's mind.

4. And how learning about sexuality can...wait for it...awaken someone's mind as well.

5. The musical deals with teenage pregnancy.

6. But also how innocence and a mother's desire to protect her children can actually harm them through a lack of knowledge.

7. The male protagonist, Melchior, challenges authority and religion.

In a journal entry, he writes, "The trouble is: the terrible prerogative of the Parentocracy in Secondary Education. A world where teachers — like parents — view us as merely so much raw material for an obedient and productive society."

8. "The Deaf West" revival gave Melchior another reason to put pressure on traditional views by deciding to give him one hearing parent and one deaf parent.

9. There are challenges that all the deaf characters must face, forcing you to think about the deaf culture and how it's perceived in society.

How crazy is that?

10. Listen to the soundtrack. That alone will be inspirational.

(spoiler)

11. In the original production...

...when Moritz commits suicide, there is no gun shot. The way he kills himself wasn't what was important to them. In the revival, the power of silence is only magnetized by having a deaf actor on the stage, signing.

Right before he commits suicide, Moritz says, "So, what will I say? I’ll tell them all, the angels, ‘I got drunk in the snow! And sang. And played pirates.’ Yes, I’ll tell them, I’m ready now, I’ll be an angel. 10 minutes ago you could see the entire horizon. Now only the dusk, and the first few stars. So dark, So dark. So dark…"

12. Instead, the reason why he takes his own life is what matters.

Melchior sang, "All things he never did are left behind / All the things his mama wished he'd bear in mind / And all his dad had hoped he'd know," to mourn the loss of his best friend. Moritz had flunked out of school for being a 'troubled' student, his father disowning him when he heard the news. Melchior sings this song directly staring at Moritz's father the entire time.

13. And lastly, the show introduced me to Andy Mientus.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
