"South Park," the second longest-running TV series after "The Simpsons," has, believe it or not, become a voice in what's going on in current events.
Two seasons ago, the famous TV series strayed away from its traditional episodes of randomness and began to focus their series' direction towards the current events of the time, specifically the rise and infatuation with Whole Foods and the candidacy and character of Donald Trump. "South Park" began to lead itself into as not just being a comedy satire for most fans, but rather the show became Wednesday's night's political reality check for most fans, like myself.
"South Park" started it's 21st season in epic fashion, expressing the current divide in our country after people begin to rally and protest against Amazon's "Alexa" for taking their jobs. Americans, specifically white supremacists, come out of the scene holding torches, pitchforks and their beloved Confederate flags. To conform to the protests and the demand for people's jobs backs, the satire shows "South Park" beginning to replace Amazon's Alexa with "Jim Bobs" or actual people, so that jobs can be brought back to the great city of South Park after Alexa and Siri took people's jobs. Cartman, when he comes home and see's Alexa was replaced by Jim Bob, says, "it works the same and makes sure people don't lose their jobs."
What's ironic about the show is that the same people who were protesting against Alexa began to hate their new jobs as the "Jim Bobs" and considered it "degrading" as one of them describes.
Now, "South Park" isn't literally telling us that Americans are stupid enough to revolt against Amazon's Alexa because they took their jobs; rather, Alexa's diversification in "South Park" is the same type that we see in the United States between Americans and Mexicans. As we all know, the United States is currently facing a era of division in it's history, with people are blaming Mexicans and immigrants for taking their skilled jobs away, but "South Park" highlights the fact that the jobs that they are taken are unwanted jobs that most Americans is going to want to take.
REALITY CHECK!
The second episode of the season focuses on the current international conflict between the North Koreans and the United States. The episode focuses around Tweak, one of the boys from South Park, who is fearing Kim Jong Un's retaliation against the United States with a series of ballistic missiles and even a potential nuclear war. With Tweak on the brink of having an anxiety attack, he figures he'd try to get Kim Jong Un to change his mind by offering him what everyone loves: cupcakes. News breaks out that Un, in fact, loved the cupcakes and was beginning to change his mind about Americans until, as we have all become so accustomed to, the President of the United States sent out a series of tweets.
The President tweets saying how Tweak is only messing with the North Koreans and he hopes that "ALL children of America will stand with Tweak in saying 'GO AHEAD AND BOMB US KIM JONG DONG, WE DARE YOU!'"
It's sad how relatable that tweet is to what we are seeing on a daily basis today.
"South Park" has proven, without a doubt, itself to be hilarious and to be one of the empires of the TV industry for the past 20 years. Although the show is meant to give us laughs, it's beginning to highlight what really is going on in our country. From domestic division to foreign affairs, "South Park" is ultimately highlighting everything that is going on in our country, for the purpose of our amusement but at the same for a reality check for most.
The show has become a better source of reality than most of the #FakeNews that we're seeing today; the satire despite amusing, offers depressing reality checks of how and where our country is heading towards currently. From Trump to Jobs to North Korea to whatever else is going on in the world, "South Park" has a episode to highlight it, and if they don't, you can expect it to come out next Wednesday. So, if you're looking for #REALNEWS and you want a laugh to comfort the time we're living in, then turn yourself to "South Park"!
