When a picture of a dress hits the Internet and causes frantic debate and concern across the world, it's time for a reality check. It's cause for concern when the hottest topic of controversy among web users is over which color an irrelevant dress is. White and gold? Blue and black? Does it even matter?
As it turns out, the Salvation Army in South Africa had similar thoughts. They took advantage of the attention this dress was getting by tweeting an ad, which posed a humbling and unsettling question.
"Is it so hard 2 see black & blue? "
The question was posted on the organization's twitter along with a photo of a woman wearing the infamous dress which had been photoshopped to strictly appear white and gold. The black and blue was not seen on the dress, but across her legs, knees, and eye socket.
The image puts into perspective what the real issues of the world should be concerning. It shines light on the real controversy; not the color of her dress, but the color of bruises and cuts that stain her body.
The organization steered away from the typical hype the illusion of this dress was getting, stating that "he only illusion is if you think it was her choice."
It is reported by the Salvation Army that 1 in 6 women are victims of abuse. The organization took something that wasn't important, the dress, and used its unfortunate popularity to spread awareness about real issues, like domestic violence.
They organization's Twitter send out a response to it's original ad, alluding to the idea that, like the dress, things are not always what they appear to be.
According to the Salvation Army webiste, their mission statement describes the organization as, "an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination."
The group works to end many of the world's issues, such as hunger relief, human trafficking, veteran services, and as shown most recently, domestic violence.
