When given the opportunity to write about anything, why not write about smiling? I asked myself if the average college student likes getting smiled at as much as I do. There really was no way to know if I didn't ask. Therefore, I sent out an anonymous survey to multiple group messages asking them to fill our a short survey about smiling. The first three questions were multiple choice (the first being consent to use results for my article) and the last two were written response. Here as the responses I received:
How often do you smile at others each day?
My survey results showed 7.7% of the people who responded smile at other people 1 to 4 times a day and 15.4% of people smile at someone 5 to 9 times a day. 76.9% of people who responded smile at someone 10 or more times a day.
How often do people smile at you each day?
The results came out as 23.1% had people smile at them both 1 to 4 times each day and 5 to 9 times. The remaining group (53.8%) said 10 or more people smile at them each day.
How does it make you feel when someone smiles at you?
This question had various answers however, there was a common theme. When smiled at, the people who responded felt valued, happy, and have an overall feeling of goodness.
How does it make you feel when you smile at someone else?
Accomplished, Energized, and the hopefulness of making someones day were the most used responses to this question.
So, what does all of this mean? Smiling is important. One simple movement of your face that takes less than 5 seconds can make someones day. Smiling is valuable and empowering. I am grateful for all the people who participated in my survey and hope the results can influence others to smile more.
